British heavyweight Dillian Whyte’s drug test failure has almost definitely killed his ambitions for his WBC challenge against Deontey Wilder. He is said to have tested positive for a banned substance before his victory against Oscar Rivas on Saturday.
If confirmed, 31-year-old Whyte could face an eight-year ban, this being his second offence. Whyte was widely praised after his performance in beating Rivas. but this discovery is almost definitely going to end in tears for Whyte’s team. It will be a knock out blow f they come out of this one. This revelation coming after a very courageous performance that saw him beat Oscar Rivas will lower his rating and present him as a cheat to the boxing world and the public. That’s if the banned substance is confirmed to have been a banned substance for which Dillian Whyte has no defence.
Whyte served a two-year ban from 2012 to 2014 for unknowingly taking an illegal supplement. The repeat of discovering illegal drugs will probably mean he can kiss the opportunity to fight Wilder goodbye. This could destroy his career.
Whyte can ask for a ‘B sample’ to be analysed – but if the second sample also tests positive, he will have to request a hearing to appeal.
Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn has posted on social media: “Further to reports, I can confirm that both Dillian Whyte and Oscar Rivas were subject to extensive Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (Vada) and Ukad testing for their bout. Both fighters were cleared to fight by both bodies and the BBBofC.”Whyte has always complained of being sidelined by the WBC after being the number 1 mandatory for 600 days. Just when he was finally granted his opportunity, the thought he may have just killed that oportunity is one that will plague his thoughts.
Meanwhile Wilder who has always been a clean athlete will laugh at Whyte who can only dream about what could have been. His only hope now is that the second sample works miracles for him.h
