Chesterfield Borough Council Exhibit poor Diana Portrait

By Sammie Jones-

A floral tribute to the late Princess Diana in the form of a portait has been mocked and criticised on social media. The memorial which was exhibited at the Chesterton market place near Sheffield last weekend is a poor resemblance of Princess Diana and lacks skill or talent. The piece of art work created as a commemoration of the 20th anniversary of Diana was expected to attract people to the town of Chesterfield, according to Chesterfield Borough Council. The portrait is so poor that the eye of media.com has decided against even featuring the image directly on our site, but readers can view it themselves on other online sites that have covered the story, including the BBC , who are always one of the first to get these stories.

However, it has produced the opposite effect of drawing criticism against the quality of the portrait designed to permanently become part of the borough’s exhibition.

One twiter user asked ”is it made of weetabix”? Others said the portrait was not nice at all and should be taken down, whilst some even asked if the portrait was drawn by primary school students. The decision to create a portrait in memory of Diana was a good one, but Chesterton Borough Council could have found better artisitc talent to draw the portrait. The portrait bears some resemblance to Diana, but a very poor one. The Diana depicted in the portrait is far less attractive than Diana’s looks in real life , almost appearing like a deliberate mockeryof her legacy. It is hardly a picture Diana’s family or two children would welcome with open arms. Diana’s set of teeth in the portrait look awful and her hair looks like the worst type from another planet.

The eyes look more like an angry woman high on something, but there is no doubt who the picture is meant to represent. It looks like the worst worst  genetic appearance one of her siblings could have inherited. Chesterton Borough Council obviously but strangely were satisfied with the final product, which is the astonishing part of it.

A spokesman for the authority said: “The well dressing is produced by 14 volunteers using the ancient Derbyshire art of well dressing, which involves creating designs from flower petals and other natural materials.

“All art is meant to be a talking point and that certainly seems to be the case with this year’s design.
“The well dressing is designed to attract visitors to the area and if the publicity encourages more people to come and experience our historic market town and local shops then that can only be good for Chesterfield.” It is doubtful the portrait will achieve its aims with respect to attracting visitors, as even those in Chesterfield resent the portrait. The 14 volunteers who contributed to the portrait would not appear to have had an abundance of artistic talent, yet there are many unsung young artistic talents that would have done much better. Diana who died in a car crash 20 years ago in Paris has been the subject of much public discussion  for the last month, attracting  both criticism and huge praise for her contribution to humanity.

Chesterfield Borough Council are not likely to want to bring down the portrait, but may be put under pressure to do so. Some writers from the eye of media.com aware of the unattractive portrait plans to question the judgment of Chesterton Borough Council in presenting such an unattractive portrait to the public.
