By Sammie Jones-
Sir Craig Mackey, the now deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police has been subjected to a sustained social media and public attack by fellow officers and members of the public after it was revealed he locked himself in his vehicle before being driven away as colleague PC Keith Palmer was stabbed to death outside the Houses of Parliament in March last year.
Social media users have fiercely berated Sir Craig on Twitter, one branding him a ‘disgrace’ compared with hero police officer Wayne Marques, who fought the London Bridge terrorists while being stabbed in the head, leg and hand. The criticisms are unfair because Sir Craig had no protective clothing or radio, and would have been taking a serious risk to his life if he had tried to physically intervene like PC Marques did. Police officers and members of the public who intervene in situations of terrorism at the expensive of their personal safety are remarkably brave.
Such acts of bravery do not logically amount to a deduction that an officer who opts for safety is a coward. Calls for Sir Mackey to quit are unjustified and without any legitimate susbstance.PC Wayne Marques was incredibly brave in fighting off off terrorists Khuram Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba with just his baton, after being blinded in one eye as they lunged at him with their knives. Also during the London Bridge attack, off-duty Metropolitan Police officer Charlie Guenigault rushed to help the injured without protective clothing.
Scene Of Westminster Terrorist Attack
Fellow police officers have derided the acting commissioner, referring to him as ‘Commissioner Coward’ in police forums. An image of him collecting his knighthood in June has been shared with the medal replaced with a white feather- a Victorian symbol for a lack of bravery or courage. Those actions are harsh and unfair.
Calls for Sir Craig to quit came as he gave evidence to the inquest into the death of terrorist Khalid Masood at the Old Bailey. Sir Craig told the inquest he went to get out of the car but was told to ‘shut the door’ and locked it. Sir Craig’s response was natural and human, he shouldn’t be getting so much stick for it. The victimization of Mr. Craig has been subjected to is to be closely assessed by The Eye Of Media.Com’s thinktank team next week as part of an assessment into understanding how people’s minds work . Two members of our brilliant team have already concluded they believe the treatment was wrong, but there are still another four to discuss with.
