Cressica Dick’s resignation was necessary in order to draw a line over the recent stream of appalling police misconduct that has seen unfit individuals whose behaviour were more akeen to that of animals in a force meant to about the enforcement of laws and justice.
Repeated acts of racism, reproachable acts of misconduct, and disturbingly obscene language from serving police officers was all that was needed to confirm that the Met had very poor leadership at all levels. The Met police force has a terrible culture of dishonour and unaccountability, calling for a broad revamp of its operations which must start at the top.
London Mayor, Sadiq Khan took the right step to put the former Met chief under enough pressure in order for the curtains to be drawn over her leadership of a broken and disgraceful police force.
Revelations that a Metropolitan police officer disciplined after an inquiry into misogynistic and racist messages was since promoted, were a slap in the face by the force, with two middle fingers up to the establishment and the public. There was a sense of taking the country back to dark years of racism
Misconduct was proven against the unnamed officer after a watchdog inquiry into messages about hitting and raping women, which were shared by up to 19 officers based mainly at Charing Cross police station, but the force is known to doing its best to cover up some of its worst offences, where possible.
Messages about the deaths of black babies and the Holocaust which led to legitimate accusations of a culture of misogyny and racism within the country’s biggest force was the final confirmation that the essence of principle and integrity in the police force has been lost.
The Met itself confirmed that the offending officer was promoted from the rank of constable to sergeant despite being sanctioned for failing to report wrongdoing, the Met confirmed.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) also revealed that three officers who remain in the Met sent potentially discriminatory messages. They were classed as being less serious than the messages that emerged on Tuesday.
On Wednesday the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, put Dick on notice that she had to urgently reform the force or he could withdraw his confidence in her. The commissioner is appointed by the mayor and home secretary.
After Khan made his intentions to oust Dick clear if she failed to deliver rapid progress, the crucial moment came after the former police chief failed to turn up for a meeting with the London Mayor on Thursday. Rather than turn up for the meeting, she threw in the towel, likely because she foresaw the the final whistle being blown for a significant failure to achieve any meaningful and observable transformation in the MET.
The MET has been labelled with institutional racism ,since its botched investigation into the murder of Stephen Lawrence in the 90’s, and its officers have only reinforced that image through its retention of racist police office filled with misogynistic tendencies.
Officers who should be protecting women have no shame in using the disdainful terminology of rape against their female colleagues, a worrying sign that many of the serving police officers today probably deserve to be in jail , not serving as law enforcement agents.
