The CCTV camera which ended Matt Hancock’s career was deliberately tampered with to “stitch up” the former Health Secretary, senior Whitehall insiders are convinced.
The camera was originally installed to point towards a glass door and balcony with sweeping views outside his ministerial office, which was considered a security weak point.
It comes as a cabinet office minister told MPs the camera in Mr Hancock’s office was an “outlier” and that it was not general policy for recording devices to be put in ministerial offices.
Sources from Whitehall believe it was turned around to point the internal doorway where Mr Hancock was caught kissing and fondling his aide Gina Coladangelo. The adjustment of the camera was made following internal knowledge of the affair, widely disapproved of by those aware of his infidelity.
However, an internal investigation is seeking to ascertain why it was moved.
A spokesman said: “DHSC continues to review its internal security processes.” The Standard has been told that private contractors, rather than police or the Government’s own officials were hired to monitor the camera. The department did not comment.
Mr Hancock shamefully resigned in the wake of the revelations which undermined his integrity, after numerous Mps broke rank to insist the Health Secretary stepped down. An estimated 80 Conservative MPs were said to have pressed for his removal, while members of the public, who had been unable to hold the hands of dying loved ones, spoke of their anger about the minister’s rule-breaking.
Adding to his lack of principles was his decision to leave his wife of 15 years, with whom he has three children. There was no expression of concern for his wife and three children, who will have to pick up the pieces of the devastating news made public before the whole world. The same mindset was at work in his dealing with the British people,, establishing a law he had no intentions of keeping himself.
In the Commons on Monday, Labour MPs mocked Mr.Hancock for not knowing there was a CCTV camera in his own office. MI5 is expected to discuss with the Cabinet Office this week whether it should investigate the leaked footage.
New Health Secretary Sajid Javid, promised to preside over a new exciting journey for the Uk, in which the target date of the full lockdown easing of July 21, is irreversible. He said we have to learn to live with the virus.
He said there was “more” to come out when he told reporters: “I haven’t disabled the camera but it has been disabled by the department. I don’t think there should be a camera as a general rule in a secretary of state’s office. There has never been one in the other departments I have run and I have no idea why there was one here — I’m sure there’ll be more as the whole incident is investigated.”
Javid’s comments could be seen to be an expression of regret that Hancock’s hypocrisy and disregard for families of those who had died from the virus, was exposed through CCTV footage. Whether the camera should have been operational and capable of showing up a cheating and deceptive politician is completely besides the facts made known that the resigned former Health Secretary was breaking rules he had set up for others to follow,
