The British parliament has passed a bill approving Brexit as Boris Johnson called for years of “rancour and division” to be left behind in its future path.
The Prime Minister express relief that the bill was finally passed, paving the way for him to keep his promise to take the Uk out of Europe at the end of January. It wasn’t all perfectly smooth because a number of Mps voted against the bill, and there were also some abstentions. Most importantly for the prime minister at the moment is that he got the bill passed.
The Bill is now just one step away from ratification, requiring only the Royal assent to become law. The Lords tried to secure additional rights including for unaccompanied child refugees but eventually gave in to Mps demands. EU officials are expected to sign the agreement in the coming days, while MEPs will vote on it next week.
The European Parliament meets on 29 January to debate the agreement, which sets out the terms of the UK’s “divorce” settlement with the EU, the rights of EU nationals resident in the UK and British expats on the continent and arrangements for Northern Ireland.
