By Ben Kerrigan-

The United Kingdom is emphasizing the crucial need for “de-escalation and moderation” in the wake of reported retaliatory strikes by Israel against Iran.

It follows Israel’s retaliatory strike against Iran, contrary to pleas for  the exercise of restraint from the international community after the drone strikes initiated by Iran last week.

Tension has been high in the Middle East over possible Israeli retaliation after Iran fired more than 300 armed drones and missiles at the Jewish state last weekend, the first time Tehran has targeted the country directly from its own soil.

Iran said the strike was a response to an attack on its embassy in Damascus that killed senior military commanders, which Tehran blamed on Israel.

Iran’s air defences shot at incoming targets and explosions were reported near the cities of Isfahan, in central Iran, and Tabriz in the north-west, local authorities and media said.

Iranian state media played down the damage from the attacks and Iran lifted flight restrictions imposed overnight.

Israel notified the US of its intention to carry out strikes in Iran on Thursday evening, giving its closest ally a few hours’ official notice, an Israeli official said.

Amidst escalating tensions, Cabinet minister Mel Stride stressed the UK’s recognition of Israel’s right to self-defense while urging its ally to prioritize efforts towards de-escalation.

Reports emerged of Iran firing air defense systems to intercept drones near a major air base and nuclear site close to Isfahan, heightening concerns of a broader conflict in the region.

Unnamed US officials indicated that Israel carried out the airstrikes in response to recent attacks by Iranian drones and missiles.

Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron is engaged in discussions with counterparts at the G7 foreign ministers meeting in Italy as the world watches with baited breath.

Speaking on the evolving events, Mel Stride emphasized the UK’s stance, stating, “Israel has a right to defend itself,” referencing previous incidents. However, he reiterated the importance of pursuing de-escalation efforts in the region.

While the reports of Israeli strikes in Iran remain unconfirmed, Mr. Stride refrained from speculating on potential UK support for such actions, emphasizing the government’s focus on de-escalation and moderation.

The recent escalation follows a series of events, including Iran’s unprecedented missile and drone attack on Israel over the weekend, prompting Tel Aviv’s vow to respond. Despite calls for restraint from allies, Israel’s actions indicate a commitment to retaliate against perceived threats.

The shadow war between Iran and Israel has persisted for decades, with recent events marking a significant escalation. The reported strike on Iran represents a notable development, with implications for regional stability and global security.

The UK’s call for de-escalation echoes broader international concerns over the potential for further conflict. The situation underscores the delicate balance between national security interests and the imperative for peaceful resolution.

Amidst uncertainty over the extent of the reported strikes and their aftermath, the international community remains vigilant, emphasizing the paramount importance of dialogue and diplomacy to defuse tensions and prevent further escalation in the volatile region.
