A body-cam footage has been released showing the moment an on-duty Metropolitan Police officer assaulted a member of the public.
Former PC Thomas Karlsen, 22, (pictured)punched and kicked the man while attending an address in New Malden, south London, following reports of a domestic dispute.
The shocking incident that has sent ripples of outrage through the public, former Metropolitan Police officer Thomas Karlsen, aged 22, was caught on body cam assaulting a member of the public while responding to a domestic dispute in New Malden, south London.
The assault, captured on video, has raised serious concerns about police misconduct and accountability. Karlsen was recently handed a suspended custodial sentence, a punishment that has sparked controversy and debate among the British public.
The incident in question took place in November of last year when Karlsen responded to reports of a domestic dispute at a residence. What should have been a routine response to a call quickly escalated into an appalling display of excessive force.
Karlsen attempted to detain a man at the scene, but instead of employing proper procedure and restraint, he resorted to punching and kicking the individual.
The victim was subsequently arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and resisting arrest.
However, upon reviewing the body-worn video footage, it became evident that the victim was subjected to unjustified violence.
Consequently, the charges against the victim were dropped, and he was released without further action.
The release of the body cam footage was instrumental in shedding light on this incident, providing clear and irrefutable evidence of the officer’s misconduct, making it impossible for authorities to overlook or excuse his actions.
It joins a growing list of cases where body cam footage has exposed police misconduct, highlighting the importance of such technology in holding law enforcement accountable.
PC Karlsen only faced repercussions for his actions after the matter was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)- the regulators of the police in the UK.
He was subsequently charged with Actual Bodily Harm (ABH). He appeared before Southwark Crown Court, where the sentencing took place.
Debate
The suspended sentence has ignited a fierce debate regarding the adequacy of the punishment, with many members of the British public expressing their dissatisfaction.
Critics argue that such a lenient sentence fails to adequately address the severity of the officer’s actions and sets a concerning precedent for future cases involving police misconduct.
DCI Clair Kelland, who oversees the South West Command Unit, publicly condemned Karlsen’s actions, emphasizing their shocking nature and disproportionate response to the situation. She issued a formal apology to the victim on behalf of the Metropolitan Police, acknowledging the trauma that the incident likely inflicted upon him.
The controversy surrounding this incident is compounded by the fact that Karlsen was well aware that his actions were being recorded on a body-worn camera. This raises the question of what might occur when officers believe they can act with impunity when they are not being observed. It also underscores the importance of body cameras in ensuring transparency and accountability within law enforcement.
Concerning Pattern Of Police Brutality
This incident is not isolated but rather part of a concerning pattern of police misconduct that has come to the forefront in recent years. Past examples of police brutality, both in the UK and internationally, serve as a grim reminder of the need for ongoing reform and accountability.
The issue of police brutality is not unique to the United Kingdom. Across the globe, incidents of excessive force by law enforcement have sparked protests and calls for reform.
The death of George Floyd in the United States in 2020, for example, ignited a global movement against police brutality and racial injustice. This incident and others like it have shown that the issue extends far beyond any one country’s borders.
In the UK, numerous cases of police misconduct have garnered public attention and scrutiny.
The 2019 case of a police officer assaulting a man in Manchester, which was also captured on video, led to the officer being convicted and sentenced to prison. The incident sent a clear message that such behavior would not be tolerated within the ranks of law enforcement.
However, the recent suspended sentence given to former PC Karlsen threatens to undermine the progress made in holding officers accountable for their actions.
Erosion Of Public Trust
Critics argue that it sends a message that police officers can engage in violent misconduct with minimal consequences, eroding public trust in law enforcement.
The punishment handed down in this case has prompted widespread calls for more stringent penalties and greater accountability for officers who abuse their power.
Many members of the British public view the suspended sentence as inadequate and are demanding a review of sentencing guidelines for cases of police misconduct.
The concern among the public is not only about the leniency of the punishment but also about the message it sends regarding the expectations of police conduct.

Kingsley Simson, 29 from Leytonstone, East London, told The Eye Of Media.Com: ”It has to be unacceptable that a police officer caught assaulting a member of the victim received a suspended sentence. he should have been jailed, straight up. That’s a soft sentence, it’s rubbish.
‘To think that with all the negative publicity the police has received in the past year, an officer can get away with blatant assault is worrying”.
Jason Longman, 26, from Edware Road said: ”The police officer should have done jail time. ‘Its crazy that he got off with a suspended sentence when the evidence of his offence is clear to see. It also makes you wonder why the police that got him charged did not appeal the decision.
‘If you guys say you push for justice, you should question the judge on what he was thinking. Maybe the judge knows the police officer or his family, why would he make such a ruling that makes no sense?”

Police officers are entrusted with significant authority and power, and with that authority comes a responsibility to use it fairly, professionally, and judiciously.
DCI Kelland’s statement that “the powers afforded to us must be used fairly and professionally” reflects the public’s expectations of law enforcement.
