A solemn sermon turned into chaos and horror as a bishop and several others were stabbed during a live-streamed service in Sydney’s suburb of Wakeley on Monday night.
Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was attacked whilst preaching at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley in Sydney’s west on Monday just after 7pm when a man dressed in a dark hoodie walked up to the altar and allegedly stabbed him multiple times.
Horrifying footage of the incident, which was being broadcast live on the church’s YouTube page depicts the moment Bishop Emmanuel look up in shock as the crazed attacker suddenly rains down blows on his face and head.
The incident has rattled the local community and left many questioning the safety and security of religious gatherings. It could lead to calls for higher security and bodily searches of members of the public attending churches in Australia, and potentially other parts of the world.
According to local media reports, the attack occurred during the sermon, with a man dressed in dark clothing approaching Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel before striking him.
The livestreamed video captured the disturbing moment as screams of horror echoed through the church and several individuals attempted to intervene.
Police swiftly responded to the scene following reports of multiple stabbings. While none of the injuries were deemed life-threatening, those affected, including the bishop, are receiving medical treatment from NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The victims, all men aged between 20 and 70, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, providing some relief amidst the shock and confusion that ensued.
The motive behind the attack remains unknown, leaving authorities and community members searching for answers. It is unclear at this time what weapon was used in the assault, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the incident.
This disturbing event comes mere days after a tragic incident at a shopping mall in the same city, where six people lost their lives in a violent attack.
The assailant was subsequently shot dead by a police officer, further heightening tensions and concerns about public safety.
While there is no indication of a direct link between the two incidents, the proximity in both time and location has sparked anxiety and fear within the community.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities as investigations into both incidents continue.
