Muhammad succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening, following an attack that occurred close to the city’s Council House just before 3:30 pm.
Investigators are currently exploring the theory that Muhammad, who was visiting the city with a friend, fell victim to a case of mistaken identity.
The police, however, have not confirmed whether more than one assailant is believed to be involved in this tragic offense.
Chief Inspector Mark Lacey, leading the investigation in Birmingham city centre, addressed the media near the crime scene on Monday.
Lacey shared that the police are actively seeking information and intelligence from the public and emphasized that the current working theory is a case of mistaken identity. He urged those responsible to surrender to the authorities.
“My message would be please hand yourself in. I know that may be a difficult thing to do, but please do so. For the good of your family, for the good of the family of Muhammad, I would say please hand yourself in to the police so that we can move this investigation forward and give some closure to the family,” Chief Inspector Lacey stated.
Expressing condolences to Muhammad’s family, Chief Inspector Lacey described the stabbing as a rare scenario, emphasizing that Birmingham remains a safe city.
He reassured the public that additional patrols would be deployed over the next few days to maintain safety and discourage criminal activity in the city centre.
Detectives are actively reviewing CCTV footage and conducting forensic inquiries to determine the identity of those responsible for Muhammad’s tragic death. Notably, the incident is not being treated as gang-related.
