Locals in Croydon are actively seeking revenge, after a man was murdered in the early hours of Saturday morning at a car park after a private house party in South Croydon.
The man, named by police as Leroy Mitchell, was shot dead by someone carrying a gun, but already angry locals are seeking revenge against the suspected culprit, instead of going to police with what they know.
Mitchell’s murder sent shock waves across Croydon, and many who know him are already piecing together their own suspects and plotting reprisals, we can reveal.
”We don’t need to snitch every time there is a murder, especially when people think they know who is responsible for a killing, and what it is about”, one local of 28 years of age anonymously told this publication.
It’s kind of peak(slang for serious) in this area, and one thing can easily lead to another, and then to murder.
But this case will be dealt with quickly, because there are many angry people about this murder”, he said.
Mitchell was a nice and popular guy, and those who thought they could use a bullet to resolve a dispute have not been thinking properly”, he said.
Mitchell was shot as he went into his car to collect a property of his.
Another resident of Croydon told this publication:”His killers must have been watching him”, one local said.
”Mitchell was very well known in this town, and the word on the street is that this was a revenge attack connected to a past drama, he was believed to be involved in. But what it means is that this is going to be a merry go round of a situation. A lot of people are angry. He was popular”.
Croydon is a crime ridden borough, not many residents there would recommend to parents looking to for a new area to find accommodation.
Last May, Croydon recorded the highest crimes this year than any other London borough . The London borough had at the time seen 7,457 reported crimes between January 2021 and March 2021 with a crime rate of 19.1 crimes per 1,000 people, according to the Metropolitan Police.
”The problem with Croydon is that a lot of people get caught up in other people’s issues just by their association with them.
Being the brother, cousin, or good friend of someone who has a gang rivalry with others can be a death sentence in this town, one male of 30, who gave his name as ‘Spider’ said.
‘I’ve seen people caught up in serious beef simply because they are defending a cousin who was speaking up for a friend that was defending their sister. It gets bloody here with the kind of egos moving about and being influenced by others”.
Witnesses are advised to report anything they know to police, and not take matters into their own hands.
According to a statement from Scotland Yard, the police were called shortly before 5am on Saturday after reports of the shooting in a car park in Birdhurst Road.
The man named as Leroy Mitchell was shot dead, despite the efforts of the emergency services, including from the London Ambulance Services.
Detectives investigating the murder are continuing to appeal for anyone who was at the party or who saw Mitchell on Friday night, October 1, to get in touch.
Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin of Specialist Crime, who is leading the investigation, said: “Officers would like to speak to anyone who was at that party, which is believed to be a silent disco. Even if you do not think you saw or heard anything significant, please contact police if you were there.
“Leroy was a popular local man and his family and friends have been left absolutely devastated by his death.
“I also want to appeal for any witnesses, anyone with information or anyone who may have relevant dash-cam or other footage to please get in touch.”
The police are also appealing for dash-cam or other relevant footage.
