Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has launched an investigation into claims that Angela Rayner, (pictured)deputy leader of the Labour Party, may have violated electoral law regarding information she provided about her living arrangements a decade ago.
The investigation stems from allegations raised by James Daly, who brought to the attention of GMP contradictory statements made by Angela Rayner regarding her primary residence.
The Deputy Labour leader and Ashton-under-Lyne MP previously said she did ‘nothing wrong’ when selling her former council house before she became an MP – following questions about whether she paid the right amount of tax on the sale
Despite GMP initially declining to investigate the matter, a formal complaint from Mr. Daly prompted a reassessment and subsequent launch of an inquiry by the police.
Angela Rayner has faced scrutiny over whether she paid the correct amount of tax on the 2015 sale of her council house, raising questions about the property’s status as her principal residence.
Concerns have been raised regarding her eligibility to purchase the property under the right-to-buy scheme, as well as discrepancies regarding her husband’s listed address and the re-registration of her children’s births.
The Labour Party has expressed confidence that Angela Rayner has abided by the rules and welcomed the opportunity to provide clarification to the police.
Both Rayner and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer have defended her actions, dismissing allegations as politically motivated attempts to smear her reputation.
