An American woman has berated the country’s healthcare system after her sister received a bill that charged her for ‘crying’.
Midge, the woman in question who goes by @mxmclain, received an invoice after a minor mole removal procedure and was disappointed to discover she was charged an extra $11 and was shocked to discover an unexpected additional US$11 for what was called “Brief Emotion.”
“Mole removal: $22. Crying: extra,” Midge tweeted while throwing in jokes such as “I didn’t even get a dam sticker” and “Is a lollipop too much to ask?”at a US hospital has charged someone for crying.
Many questioned the ways the healthcare system is erroneous in charging people for their display of emotions.
The woman from New York, through a series of tweets, has claimed that her sister was charged a sum of $40, or roughly Rs 3,000, for crying in the hospital. The user, who goes by the name Camille Johnson, shared a hospital receipt that displayed various tests and analysis done on the patient, her sister. In the list is mentioned a sum of $40 for “Brief Emotional” behaviour.
In a Twitter thread revealing pitfalls of the American healthcare system, she wrote: ‘They charged her more for crying than they did for a vision assessment test.
‘They charged her more for crying than for a hemoglobin test. They charged her more for crying than for a health risk assessment. They charged her more for crying than for a capillary blood draw.’
For all these other tests, Camille’s sister was charged between $15 and $30, as shown in a photograph of the bill.
Camille said her sister got ’emotional because she feels frustrated and helpless
She wrote: “One tear in and they charged her $40 (£32) without addressing why she is crying, trying to help, doing any evaluation, any prescription, nothing.”
The image of the bill appears to back Camille’s claim, showing a $40 charge for what is described as ‘Brief Emotional/Behav Assmt’.
Other charges on the bill cover a range of treatments costing between $15 and $30, as well as a heftier charge of $350.
Camille, a YouTuber from New York, also tagged Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders, writing: “I’ve always wanted to tell you i love you. Maybe you will see this. Thank you for your work.”
People were shocked by what they’d read, with one person commenting: ‘This is why most people don’t seek help. They just cry at home hoping to heal in silence. smh. I pray your sister gets better.’
Another added: ‘Dude that’s so wrong and has to be illegal. I don’t know how the hell anyone could make money off of someone simply expressing emotion. Jesus Christ, capitalism gone too far imo.’.’
Another follower replied: ‘But they didn’t evaluate nor ask her any questions pertaining to her crying. They just added it as a charge to the bill.
‘Looks like “time” was really of the essence without her even receiving the actual, spontaneous “assessment” claimed to be given.
