The U.S state of Alabama has become the latest U.S state to propose the prohibition abortions by passing a bill to outlaw the procedure in almost all cases. The bill will need to be signed by Government Kay Ivey, who has not stated her approval for it.
Insiders believe Ivey will sign the bill to the rise of mass protests. Alabama is known for its strong religious rhetorics, but sweeping laws against abortion run conflicts with good reasoning.
The blanket introduction of anti abortion laws in several states of America is a worrying development threatening the rights of women since the inauguration of president Trump in January 2017. Trump is a man of conviction whose pro life ideology is gaining momentum in many states, but facing challenge and unpopularity in many others.
Senators rejected an attempt to add an exception for rape and incest, with the amendment voted down 21-11, with four Republicans joining Democrats in the seeking the amendment.Democratic Senator Bobby Singleton angrily condemned the bill after the amendment’s defeat.
“You don’t care anything about babies having babies in this state, being raped and incest,” Democratic Senator Bobby Singleton said angrily after the amendment’s defeat.”You just aborted the state of Alabama with your rhetoric with this bill.” “The question for me – for us – is: When is a person a person?”, Republican Senator Clyde Chambliss said as debate began on the proposed ban.
Supporters of the new law say they anticipate a block in the lower court but believe the appeals process will bring it before the Supreme Court.
OVERTURN
They want the court, which now has a conservative majority, to overturn the 1973 ruling legalising abortion. Sixteen other states are seeking to impose new restrictions on abortion. The new restrictions are in line with the anti abortion views of U.S president, Donald Trump who adopts Christian views that believe the sanctity of life should be kept sacred.
BLOCKED
Earlier this year the Supreme Court blocked implementation of new abortion restrictions in Louisiana. However the ruling was by a narrow margin, leading to plans for a reviewed later this year. The new law rests on the assumption that 1973 Roe v Wade ruling will be undermined or overturned completely. In that case, The Supreme Court ruled that the right to privacy privacy that protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose whether or not to have an abortion.
It also ruled that this right is not absolute and must be balanced against the government’s interests in protecting women’s health and protecting prenatal life.
CONTROL
Democrats, who hold a mere eight seats in the 35-member Senate have lambasted the proposed abortion ban as a mixture of political grandstanding, an attempt to control women and a waste of taxpayer dollars.
“You don’t have to provide for that child. You don’t have to do anything for that child, yet you want to make that decision for that woman,” Democratic Senator Vivian Davis Figures said.
“It should be that woman’s choice.
CHOICE
A crowd of about 50 people protested the proposal outside the Alabama Statehouse where they set up a rally. They chanted, “Whose choice? Our choice.”
It was full of women dressed as characters from The Handmaid’s Tale, which depicts a dystopian future where fertile women are forced to breed. If signed into law by Ms Ivey, the bill would take effect in six months.
The Eye Of Media.Com is due to contact the governor of Alabama to heavily criticise the refusal to make exceptions for rape or incest.
