Hayden Panettiere, the actor who rose to international fame through television hits including Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36, her family confirmed Sunday. Her father, Skip Panettiere, announced her death in a statement released through the actor’s representative, describing his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought love and joy to those around her.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he said.

No cause or manner of death has been disclosed. Panettiere’s publicist, Kasey Kitchen, said an investigation was underway. Police in Greenville, South Carolina, said officers and emergency medical personnel responded at about 1:50 p.m. Sunday to a report of an unresponsive woman. Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene after medical assistance was administered.

According to police, an acquaintance of Panettiere made the 911 call. The Greenville Police Department is investigating the death alongside the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. Authorities said the preliminary investigation had not indicated signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.

Panettiere’s death comes at a particularly poignant moment in a career and life she had recently begun examining publicly. In May, she released This Is Me: A Reckoning, a candid memoir in which she addressed childhood fame, motherhood, addiction, postpartum depression, trauma, relationships and loss. Published May 19, the 320-page book was billed by its publisher as an account of her life told on her own terms.

The memoir arrived after years in which Panettiere had spoken increasingly openly about the private struggles behind her public career. Panettiere became a household name as Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes, the science-fiction drama that became a major television phenomenon in the 2000s. Her character, a teenager with extraordinary regenerative abilities, helped make Panettiere one of the defining young stars of the era.

She later took on an equally significant role as Juliette Barnes on Nashville, portraying a fiercely ambitious country singer navigating fame, relationships and personal turmoil. The performance earned Panettiere two Golden Globe nominations. Her career, however, had begun long before either show.Born and raised in Palisades, New York, Panettiere entered show business as an infant, appearing in television commercials at just 11 months old. By age 4, she had begun appearing on television, including roles on the daytime soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light.

Her early credits also included the voice of Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, as well as appearances in films such as Remember the Titans and Bring It On: All or Nothing. She later appeared in the Scream franchise, including Scream 4 and Scream VI.

Yet behind the success was a personal struggle that Panettiere increasingly refused to keep hidden. After giving birth to her daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, in 2014, Panettiere said she experienced severe postpartum depression. She described the period as one in which she felt profoundly unwell despite having long dreamed of becoming a mother.

In an emotional interview earlier this year, she explained how anxiety and panic attacks contributed to her dependence on substances. She also spoke about the painful decision in 2018 to give custody of Kaya to the child’s father, Ukrainian former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Panettiere repeatedly emphasized that the decision did not mean she had abandoned her daughter. Instead, she said she believed it was necessary at the time while she worked toward recovery. She continued to speak lovingly about Kaya and the bond they shared, expressing hope that their relationship would grow stronger with time.

Her openness about motherhood and addiction became an important part of the story she wanted to tell through This Is Me: A Reckoning. The memoir also examined the pressures of growing up in the entertainment industry and the experience of having intensely personal struggles played out in public. Panettiere had also been dealing with another devastating loss. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died unexpectedly in 2023 at 28 from an undiagnosed heart condition.

In 2024, Hayden described the impact of losing someone who had been beside her throughout the defining moments of her life. “When you lose somebody that you saw in all the important moments in your life, standing right next to you, it just rocks your world,” she said in an interview with NBC’s TODAY.

Her professional life also extended beyond acting. Panettiere was involved in ocean conservation and served as a spokesperson for the Whaleman Foundation. She appeared in The Cove, the Oscar-winning documentary about the killing of dolphins in Japan, and received the Genesis Wyler Award from the Humane Society for her advocacy.

News of her death prompted tributes from fellow performers and others who had worked with her. Actor Emme Ryland, who appeared alongside Panettiere in Bring It On: All or Nothing, remembered her as a “sweet soul.” Panettiere’s final years had seen her reclaiming control of a story that had often been shaped by headlines about her personal life. Her memoir represented perhaps the clearest expression of that effort: an attempt to place her own voice at the centre of a life lived under extraordinary public scrutiny.

She had spent more than three decades in front of cameras, moving from commercials and daytime television to blockbuster films and some of the most recognizable television dramas of her generation.

But her legacy is unlikely to rest solely on the characters she played. Panettiere spoke candidly about addiction, mental health, motherhood, grief and recovery at a time when each revelation risked renewed scrutiny. Her willingness to confront those experiences publicly offered audiences a view of the person behind the celebrity image.

Panettiere’s family has asked for privacy as they mourn. Her millions of fans who watched her grow from a child performer into an acclaimed television actor,  would  view her death at just 36, as  marking the loss of a talent whose career began almost as soon as she could walk — and whose most recent work sought to ensure that, at the end, her story belonged to her.
