A 22 year old has been arrested on suspicion of murder, after a late night shooting at a London pub in front of horrified onlookers.
Police and emergency services were called to Landor Road shortly before 10pm on Monday after reports of gunfire near the Landor Pub. Officers arriving at the scene found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds outside the premises.
Paramedics reached the scene within three minutes, with London Ambulance Service deploying an ambulance crew, an incident response officer, fast-response paramedics and a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance. Despite efforts to save him, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second man, aged 22, later turned up at hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in hospital while police continue their investigation.
The shooting unfolded in an area where people had been enjoying an evening at the pub, with local residents describing the sudden sound of bangs followed by a rush of emergency vehicles. One resident said they heard several loud pops shortly after 10pm and initially questioned whether the sounds had been gunshots.
The incident has left people living nearby shaken. One local woman said the death had made her reconsider remaining in London, telling reporters that she had spoken to her daughter about wanting to move away following the violence.
Police have since sealed off parts of Landor Road and nearby Willington Road as detectives work to establish exactly what happened. Forensic officers were seen examining the area, while a forensic tent was erected alongside the road and police vehicles remained at the scene into Tuesday morning.
Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, Central South Borough Commander, said officers recognised the concern the shooting would cause among residents and confirmed that an increased police presence would remain in the area while enquiries continued.
She also expressed sympathy for the victim’s relatives and appealed directly to anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information that could assist detectives to come forward.
The London Ambulance Service said crews had been sent to the scene following a call at 9.59pm reporting a shooting on Landor Road. A spokesperson said the first paramedics arrived within three minutes but were unable to save the injured man.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Police are expected to continue gathering forensic evidence and speaking to witnesses as they seek to piece together the events that led to the fatal attack.
The arrested man has not been charged, and the investigation remains ongoing.
