Thomas Markle, the estranged father of the Duchess of Sussex, has been arrested in Florida on federal charges relating to the alleged possession of child sexual abuse material, following an international investigation spanning the United States, the Philippines and the United Kingdom.
The 82-year-old father of Meghan Markle, has been arrested in Florida after American federal authorities accused him of possessing child sexual abuse material, including photographs allegedly depicting him with naked underage girls.

The arrest, announced on Friday, 2026, marks a significant development in an investigation that has attracted attention across several countries and threatens to bring further distress to the already strained relationship between Meghan and her father.
According to the United States Department of Justice, Markle faces one federal count of possessing child sexual abuse material. He was arrested by FBI agents in Florida and was expected to appear before a court in Tampa on Friday. If convicted, he could face a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
The allegations are particularly disturbing because investigators say the material was discovered in two storage units in the Los Angeles area which Markle had reportedly rented since 2008. Federal agents searched the units last week after obtaining a warrant, seizing approximately 78 items, including photographic slides, 35mm film negatives and books containing suspected child sexual abuse material.

According to a criminal complaint and accompanying affidavit, at least two frames found among the film negatives allegedly depicted a man identified by a witness as Markle alongside a nude pre-pubescent girl. Investigators described the images as showing poses designed to elicit a sexual response from the viewer. These are serious allegations, and their accuracy and evidential significance will ultimately have to be established through the judicial process.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest, alleging that Markle had targeted children. First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli also described the allegations as extremely serious, saying federal prosecutors intended to pursue the case under the full extent of American law.
The investigation reportedly began in October after the FBI received information from a witness who claimed to have discovered suspected child abuse material among Markle’s possessions in the Philippines, where he had previously lived. Investigators subsequently spoke to a second witness, who provided information about storage facilities Markle had rented in California.
Some of the photographic evidence appears to have been taken in the Philippines. According to the affidavit, investigators identified hotel or motel bedding in at least one image, suggesting that the photograph was taken during Markle’s time in the country.
The case has an international dimension. Philippine authorities reportedly began investigating Markle last month following allegations that he possessed child sexual abuse images. British police also confirmed last month that allegations concerning him would be referred to overseas law enforcement agencies after it emerged that earlier claims had not been passed on to the relevant authorities when initially received.
The involvement of several jurisdictions raises important questions about the handling of suspected child sexual exploitation material and the coordination required when allegations cross international borders. The investigation also illustrates how information supplied by witnesses in one country can lead to searches, evidence gathering and potential criminal proceedings thousands of miles away.
Markle had previously rejected the accusations when they first emerged, describing them in comments to the Daily Mail as untrue and ‘sick lies’. His arrest does not amount to a conviction, and he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence. It was not immediately clear whether he had legal representation following his arrest.
The developments are likely to be deeply distressing for Meghan, who has publicly distance her self from her father ever since she married her husband Prince Harry in 2018, has previously described herself as deeply upset by the allegations against her father. Buckingham Palace and a spokesperson for Meghan had not immediately responded to requests for comment following the arrest.
The circumstances are especially sensitive given the long-standing public breakdown in the relationship between Meghan and her father, which attracted international attention around the time of her marriage into the British Royal Family. However, the criminal allegations must be considered independently of the family’s personal history.
At the heart of the investigation are allegations involving the sexual exploitation of children, an issue that carries profound consequences for victims and society. The possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material are treated as serious federal offences in the United States, reflecting the harm involved in creating and circulating images of abused children.
