Marcus Rashford In Proposed Swapped Deal With Arsenal

By Tim Parsons-
Marcus Rashford’s uncertain Manchester United future has taken another intriguing turn after former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon suggested the England forward could be exchanged for highly rated Gunners youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The audacious idea would see Rashford move to Arsenal while Lewis-Skelly heads in the opposite direction, creating one of the more eye-catching hypothetical swaps of the summer transfer window. Dixon, however, was clear that his proposal was not a criticism of Lewis-Skelly, but rather an argument that both players could benefit from a change of surroundings.

Speaking to BestBettingSites, Dixon said he would “probably” make the exchange, arguing that Rashford could thrive under Mikel Arteta while Lewis-Skelly might benefit from having the freedom to develop elsewhere.

“Would I swap them? You know what, I probably would,” Dixon said. “And that’s nothing against Myles Lewis-Skelly; it’s about giving him the freedom to go and expand his game elsewhere.”

Dixon also believes Arsenal could provide the environment Rashford needs to rediscover his best form. The forward has endured an increasingly complicated period at Manchester United, despite having established himself as one of the club’s most recognisable attacking players during a decade at Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old came through United’s academy and emerged spectacularly under Louis van Gaal in 2016, scoring on his senior debut against FC Midtjylland before announcing himself on the biggest domestic stage with two goals against Arsenal only days later.

That early breakthrough appeared to signal the arrival of a potential long-term Manchester United superstar.

Over the following years, Rashford developed into a regular England international and one of United’s principal attacking threats. His most productive individual season came in 2022-23, when he scored 30 goals in all competitions under Erik ten Hag, helping United win the Carabao Cup and finish third in the Premier League.

But the consistency that accompanied some of Rashford’s finest periods has proved difficult to maintain. His form dipped after his outstanding 2022-23 campaign, while his relationship with the club and subsequent managers became increasingly complicated.

Rashford was eventually frozen out by Ruben Amorim and spent the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Aston Villa. He then joined Barcelona on loan, giving the forward the opportunity to experience football away from the club where he had spent his entire professional career.

His return to Manchester United has therefore been accompanied by considerable uncertainty. United have also reshaped their attacking options, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, while Amad Diallo has continued to develop as another important attacking option.

That changing landscape means Rashford’s place in the United squad is far from straightforward, even though his record and experience remain significant assets.

Across his Manchester United career, Rashford has also developed something of a reputation as a player who can rise to major occasions. Arsenal are among his most frequent victims, with the England international having scored six times against the Gunners during his decade with United.

A move to north London would nevertheless represent an extraordinary development given the historic rivalry between the two clubs. Manchester United and Arsenal have been among the defining forces of English football for generations, particularly during the Premier League era, when their clashes frequently had title implications.

The rivalry reached its most intense period under Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsène Wenger, when United and Arsenal repeatedly competed for domestic supremacy. Matches between the sides became symbolic of the wider battle for control of English football, making the prospect of Rashford moving directly between them especially provocative.

Yet football’s transfer market has changed considerably since those confrontations. Players now regularly move between major Premier League clubs, although direct transfers involving established stars from historically rival clubs remain capable of generating substantial controversy.

The potential Arsenal destination also makes sense from a tactical perspective if Dixon’s argument is considered. Arsenal have been seeking additional attacking quality, while Arteta has built a squad capable of competing across multiple fronts.

Dixon believes Arteta could be particularly well suited to Rashford’s personality and playing style.

“With Marcus Rashford, he’s a player who needs an arm around his shoulder, and Arteta would be great for him,” Dixon said. “Give him that love, give him the freedom to play on that left side, and yeah, I’d like to see him in an Arsenal shirt.”

However, Dixon stopped short of claiming Rashford should automatically be regarded as a guaranteed elite performer.

“I have my reservations about whether he’s consistently a top-class player,” he admitted, while arguing that Rashford would nevertheless represent a valuable addition to Arsenal’s current squad.

The other half of the proposed exchange is equally significant.

Lewis-Skelly has rapidly become one of Arsenal’s most intriguing young players, although his development has not followed the straightforward path of an undisputed Premier League starter.

The academy graduate initially endured a difficult period before establishing himself as an important member of Arteta’s squad. His versatility has been particularly valuable, allowing him to operate at left-back and in midfield.

Despite his growing reputation, his Premier League opportunities have been relatively limited. He started only five league matches during the season referred to in the report, although Arteta trusted him on the European stage and selected him to start the Champions League final.

That contrast between his league starts and his importance in the Champions League illustrates the complicated position Lewis-Skelly occupies within the Arsenal squad.

United, meanwhile, have reasons to admire his versatility. The club have been looking to strengthen both midfield and the left-back position, two areas in which Lewis-Skelly can operate.

That has helped fuel speculation that Arsenal could potentially consider offers for the youngster despite his importance and considerable long-term potential. Acquiring Lewis-Skelly  for United would represent a radically different strategy from simply signing another established attacker. The teenager would offer versatility, youth and the possibility of becoming a major long-term asset.

Rashford would provide the opposite profile: an experienced Premier League forward who has played at the highest level for club and country and has already demonstrated his ability to produce decisive performances.

The biggest question, however, is whether there is any substance behind the swap idea beyond Dixon’s comments.

At present, the proposal should be regarded as a hypothetical suggestion rather than evidence that Manchester United and Arsenal are negotiating a player exchange. There is no indication in the material provided that either club has formally proposed such a deal.

That distinction is important because Rashford’s future is already one of the most closely watched stories surrounding United, while Lewis-Skelly remains a valuable young asset for Arsenal.

Rashford’s situation is particularly intriguing because his United career has moved from academy success and record-breaking promise to a period of uncertainty about where he fits into the club’s next generation.

The arrival of Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko has intensified that uncertainty. United are building a new attacking structure, and the question is whether Rashford can find a place within it or whether his future ultimately lies elsewhere.

The attraction for Arsenal would be obvious if Arteta believes he can restore Rashford to his best form. The player who scored 30 goals in a single campaign remains capable of producing devastating pace, movement and finishing when confidence and form align.

Whether Arsenal would be prepared to sacrifice Lewis-Skelly for that possibility is an entirely different question.

The proposed swap therefore remains an intriguing thought experiment rather than a confirmed transfer plan. But it captures the central dilemma surrounding both players.

Rashford needs to rediscover consistency and determine where he can produce his best football. Lewis-Skelly needs regular opportunities to continue his development into the versatile player Arsenal believe he can become. Dixon’s suggestion has brought those two trajectories together in an unexpected way.

Rashford at the moment, remains a Manchester United player and Lewis-Skelly remains an Arsenal prospect. But with the summer transfer window providing no shortage of surprises, the idea of the two changing clubs offers a fascinating glimpse at how dramatically the futures of two prominent Premier League players could change.
