The BBC is set to honour one of EastEnders’ most enduring and popular characters with a special evening dedicated to Denise Fox, marking 20 years since the character first arrived in Albert Square.
Broadcast on Monday, May 11 on BBC Three, the tribute night will celebrate Denise’s most dramatic, emotional and memorable storylines across two decades in Walford. The character is portrayed by Diane Parish, whose performance has made Denise one of the soap’s defining modern characters.
Parish first appeared in EastEnders in 1998, briefly playing singer Lola Christie for six months before returning permanently in 2006 as D enise Fox, the sharp-tongued salon owner who quickly became a fan favourite. Over the years, Denise has been at the centre of some of the soap’s biggest storylines, ranging from serial killer revelations and family trauma to complex love triangles and murder cover-ups.
The anniversary programming will air from 8pm to 11pm , and will revisit several landmark episodes that defined Denise’s journey on the long-running BBC soap.
Among the featured episodes is the dramatic 2010 storyline in which Denise exposed her husband, Lucas Johnson, played by Don Gilet, as a serial killer. The storyline remains one of EastEnders’ most acclaimed modern plots and cemented Denise as one of the show’s emotional anchors.
Fans will also revisit the controversial 2013 episode in which Denise shared a kiss with Ian Beale, as well as the explosive 2023 Christmas Day instalment centred on the death of Keanu Taylor, portrayed by Danny Walters. Denise became entangled in the aftermath of Keanu’s murder alongside several of Walford’s leading women in one of the soap’s biggest festive storylines in recent years.
Another featured episode focuses on Denise’s complicated romantic dilemma between long-term partner Jack Branning, played by Scott Maslen, and businessman Ravi Gulati, portrayed by Aaron Thiara. The love triangle generated significant discussion among viewers and became one of the soap’s most talked-about storylines of 2025.
According to listings published by the Radio Times, the schedule for the Denise Fox celebration night is:
- 8pm — The Downfall of Lucas Johnson (2010)
- 8.30pm — Denise and Ian Beale Kiss (2013)
- 9pm — Keanu Taylor Dies on Christmas Day (2023)
- 10pm — Denise Chooses Between Jack and Ravi (2025)
- 10.30pm — Joel Marshall’s Behaviour Takes a Turn (2025)
- 11pm — EastEnders Investigates: The Manosphere (2025)
The final programme of the evening, EastEnders Investigates: The Manosphere, will see Parish front a documentary examining online misogyny and toxic digital culture, reflecting the soap’s increasing focus on socially relevant themes.
The celebration underlines Denise Fox’s importance to the history of EastEnders, which has remained one of Britain’s most-watched and culturally significant soap operas since its launch in 1985. Across her 20 years in Walford, Denise has evolved from a resilient single mother into one of the Square’s most recognisable matriarchs, earning praise for storylines tackling domestic abuse, grief, infidelity, mental health and family loyalty.
The special night also comes amid continued public fascination with former EastEnders stars and where their careers have taken them after leaving Walford. Recently, former cast member Carli Norris, who played Belinda Slater until 2016, revealed she now runs a vintage-inspired fashion boutique and hosts a spirituality podcast following her departure from the soap.
With nostalgia-driven programming continuing to attract strong audiences, the Denise Fox anniversary event is expected to appeal to both long-time viewers and newer fans eager to revisit some of EastEnders’ most iconic moments.
