Deadly US Shooting At U.S Ice Hocky Game As Gunman Kills Family Members

By Aaron Miller-

A deadly shooting at a high school ice hockey game left at least two people dead and three others critically injured on Monday afternoon, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred at Lynch Arena during a busy local tournament, sending players and spectators scrambling for cover.

Police have identified the gunman as 56-year-old Robert K. Dorgan, a resident of North Providence, who also went by the name Roberta Esposito and was reportedly transgender. Dorgan opened fire on members of his own family in what police are describing as a targeted “family dispute,” before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

Among the victims were a mother and her child, both shot in the stands. Officials have not released the identities of the deceased, but community leaders confirmed the victims included members of one family known locally. Three additional victims were being treated in hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses described harrowing scenes as roughly a dozen shots rang out, with some players abandoning the ice and seeking safety in locker rooms. A bystander reportedly disarmed the shooter briefly before he drew a second weapon.

Local law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Rhode Island State Police, are investigating the incident. Officials have stressed there is no indication of any threat to the public beyond this family-targeted attack.

Familicide and Related Shootings in the U.S.

While mass shootings often dominate headlines in the U.S., family-targeted shootings form a distinct and troubling category of violent crime. Experts say the causes are complex, often involving domestic strife, mental health struggles, and access to firearms.

A familicide in Enoch, Utah saw eight relatives killed by a lone attacker before police responded. The suspect had known domestic issues, and authorities characterized the situation as a domestic dispute escalating to mass murder.

The  Thurston High School Shooting (Oregon) in 1998 was triggered by family turmoil. The 15-year-old gunman had previously murdered his parents at home before opening fire at his school, killing two students and injuring many more.

The Minneapolis Catholic School Shooting in 2025 saw a father with ties to the community entered a school event and killed multiple children and adults, reflecting once again how gun violence can erupt around family and community settings.

These cases illustrate that violence within families can have far-reaching effects, especially when it spills into public spaces.

It’s critical to distinguish the facts of criminal action from broader discussions about identity. Law enforcement has identified the shooter in the Rhode Island incident as transgender.

However, statistical research and expert commentary indicate that violent crime is overwhelmingly committed by persons without any particular gender identity profile, and individual criminal acts should be understood in their specific social and psychological contexts, not as representative of entire communities.

State and local officials have mourned the loss and stressed unity. Statements from leaders praised first responders and called for support services for families affected by the tragedy, particularly students present at the hockey tournament.
