Detectives in Seattle are investigating a double homicide after  two teenage pupils were shot dead at a bus stop.

Police provided emergency medical treatment to the victims until the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) arrived at the scene. SFD pronounced both victims deceased at the scene.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the area on foot before police arrived. Officers and deputies searched the area yet they did not find the suspect.

Police cordoned off the area until homicide detectives and the Crime Scene Investigation Unit arrived to process the scene.

“This wasn’t just a shooting; it was an execution of our future,” said Marcus Arredondo, a local youth mentor who arrived at the scene shortly after the gunfire ceased. “You see these kids every day, joking about basketball or complaining about homework. To see them lying there, right where they wait for the bus to go home… it breaks something in you that might not fix.”

According to witnesses, the violence was sudden and surgical. At approximately 3:55 p.m., as the sidewalk was crowded with students from Rainier Beach High School and South Shore PreK-8, a dark-coloured sedan pulled toward the curb. A gunman reportedly exited the vehicle and opened fire at close range.

“I heard the pops and thought it was fireworks at first, but then the screaming started,” said Elena Torres, who was waiting in her car at a nearby red light. “It was pure panic. Kids were  running into the middle of the street in panic. It was crazy”.

Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz, standing before a thicket of microphones as investigators worked behind him, did not mince words about the brutality of the act. “We have two families tonight whose lives have been permanently destroyed,” Diaz stated, his voice tight with visible frustration. “This appears to be a targeted attack, and we are throwing every available resource from our Violent Crimes Unit into finding those responsible. To the person who pulled that trigger: we will not stop until you are in custody.”

The physical chaos of the scene was compounded by an injury to a responding officer. Amid the tactical sweep for the shooter, a veteran officer suffered a severe leg injury and had to be evacuated by Seattle Fire Department medics. “Our officers were running toward the danger while everyone else was running away,” a department spokesperson noted. “It underscores the volatility of these scenes.”

As the King County Medical Examiner began the grim task of identifying the victims, the Seattle Public Schools district moved into a state of emergency. Superintendent Fred Podesta released a blistering statement late Friday night, calling for an end to the “senseless cycle of bloodshed” that has haunted South Seattle.

“Our schools are meant to be sanctuaries,” Podesta said. “When a student cannot stand at a bus stop without fear for their life, we have failed as a society. We are cancelling all district activities tomorrow to allow our staff and families time to mourn, but mourning is not enough. We need change.”

By midnight, the intersection—usually the vibrant heart of the neighbourhood—was a ghost town of yellow tape and forensic markers. A small, spontaneous vigil began to form at the edge of the perimeter.

A grandmother, draped in a heavy wool coat, placed two white candles on the damp pavement. “We keep saying ‘never again,'” she whispered to a neighbour. “And yet, here we are again, washing blood off the streets before the sun comes up.”
