The British press failed Diana Abbott in their coverage of the racist attacks the Mp faced by vile twitter users.
The Labour MP appeared on Good Morning Britain to highlight racist abuse she had received from racists twitter users who had called her the ‘N’ word, threatened her with acid attacks, and even been so despicable as to threaten to throw acid on her. A number of the British media who covered the story focused on her use of the N word, rather than those who subjected her to those words.
Now, the eye of media, under the auspices of editor, Gabriel Princewill, will write to thw writers and editors of each paper that failed to criticise the abusers or even hinted wongdoing at the Labour MP. A number of our writers will be closely assessing the articles in great detail over the weekend.
The news outlets to be listed for contacting at the moment include The Evening Standard, The Daily Express, The Mirror, The Hackney Citizen, and any others missed out in this list. All of the above papers who covered the stories failed to tackle the racist abusive alanguage direct at Abbott, many of them presenting their article in a way that appeared to hold Diane responsible for expressing the vile language used against her.
When the news broke out, two of our writers( who are white) were shocked at the stance of reporters over the issue, and their proclivity to focus their attention on Diane’s use of the word, rather than those who had subjected her to the abuse. Some others on social media had also express disappointment at the focus placed on the Mp in simply telling the story of her ordeal.
Plans to publish our perspective on the story the same day on Thursday, were immediately halted, following the internal decision that we closely examine each article and the programme, discuss it , before deciding an approach forward.
ABUSE
Politician, Diane Abbott had appeared on the ITV show this morning to talk about the levels of abuse she had received, which is revealed to have accounted for half of all abuse aimed at MPs. 46 year old host, Susanna, 46, gasped after 63 year old Abbott revealed some of the shocking abuse she had been subjected to including the N racial slur and a swear .
The presenter told her: “I think whatever anyone thinks of politics, differing political views, the fact that you received almost half of all the abusive tweets sent in the run-up to the general election – 45 per cent – is just completely unacceptable, intolerable.”
Diane told the show: “We knew we were getting a lot of the online abuse, but we also knew other MPs spoke about it also. But when we discovered that we were getting half of the abuse…
“When I say abuse, it wasn’t, ‘I don’t agree with you about nationalising the railway’. It was people calling you a n****r b***h, threatening acid attacks, it’s rape, it’s death threats and it’s upsetting for me. But it’s also upsetting for my staff.”
SHOCKED
A shocked Suzanna responded: “Absolutely right and also people listening to those abusive terms will also be upset by them, you’ve received them directly”. The eye of media.com have always been committed to upholding fairness and principled journalism, and particularly expect the press to always to express high standards in the dealings of their subjects. The atatcks Diane Abbott was subjected to were not only racist, but also very sexist and evil. It deserves alot more attention and wider measures must be taken to address and root out these kinds of evil.
