U.S president, Donald Trump, has accused former president Obama of tapping his Trump Tower during the presidential elections.
Trump made the far-reaching and seemingly baseless accusation in an early morning tweet on Saturday, comparing it to ”McCarthyism. In the tweet, the President said ”Terrible”! Just found out that Obama had my wires tapped’ I Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found, this is McCarthyism, he said. ”Is it legal for a sitting president to be wire tapping a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by a court earlier. A new low”.
Trump suggested a good lawyer could hold Obama to account for the alleged tapping, leaving out the known fact that lawyers have to operate on the grounds of evidence. Trump may have some hidden evidence he is keeping to himself but until such evidence is made public, he should refrain from making statements that require evidence to back them. They damage his reputation further. However, it is possible Trump privately believes he has evidence for his claims which he is choosing to keep quiet, if that’s how he wants to play his cards. During the 2016 elections, there were reports that the FBI was investigating links between Trump’s campaign and Russia. The FBI are believed to have been granted a court warrant last October, given them permission to examine the activities of ”U.S” persons in Donald Trump’s campaign ties to Russia.
President Trump’s administration has been facing a barrage of questions over alleged ties to Russia, and the president’s Security adviser, Michael Flynn was forced to resign last month over his contact with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador. Revelations that Mr.Sessions had two meetings with Mr. Kislyak has also led to sessions saying on Friday that he would ”recuse himself from a probe into Russian interference in the 2016 elections.
