Northern England is to benefit from a £15m culture and creativity boost, following an announcement by the culture secretary.
Karen Bradley said the money would have a transformative local effect and provide a legacy for the exhibition of the North. The Northern Cultural regeneration is set to make grants to support major and tech capital project. The Great Exhibition is to be held in Newcastle and Gateshead and set to be the great showpiece of 2018.
The money adds to a £3.4bn investment in the Northern powerhouse through the Local Growth Fund for projects boosting local economies . Bradley said ”the fundng will contribute to the cultural life of the Northern Powerhouse for years to come”
The first round of bids are expected to be co-ordinated by 14 regions including Yor, North Yorkshire, Leeds City region, , Liverpool city region, Greater Manchester, and many others. A renovation of live music centres is also on the cards. Sustainable cultural and creative regeneration is expected to result in areas with successful bids that historically have low levels of cultural creativity.
Opportunities for unknown talents to contribute to culture and creativity have not been enough in the North of England. The money has a huge potential to bring out the best out of communities, motivating community leader and residents to ensure the fruits of its progress is realised. There will have to be a great deal of accountability in how the money is used and distributed to avoid abuse.
The governemnt may also be expected to make worthwhile contributions to beneficial ideas that would help engage youths, particularly disaffected youths. Many unearthed talents exist everywhere, and when money like this is put out from the government, it is important it is used wisely and productively.
Londoners may well be jealous as to why they have not received a similarly huge injection of funds from the government. However, Londoners have long been the beneficiaries of several cultural outlets, especially with the UK government based in Westminster, London.
However, they too can benefit immensely from a massive funding of this sort. The North of England will feel they have been marginalised for too long, and so willfeel gifted to have this infusion of cash thrown their way.
