Ukranian Police To Charge Firm Suspected Of Global Malware Spread

Ukrainian police are to charge of one of the largest accounting software firms in the country following an investigation.  The  charge follows the seizure of the company’s server after a malware virus hit dozens of global enterprises last week had spread via its malicious update.

An investigation into one of the largest recent cyber attacks, the servers of Ukraine’s most popular accounting software, M.E.Doc were seized by Ukrainian police Tuesday, Reuters reported, citing the head of Ukraine’s Cyber Police. Col Serhih Dermidiuk, head of Ukraine’s national  cyber police unit.

Ukrainian  police, intelligence officials and security firms experts believe the virus which infected computers worldwide was spread through the accounting firm’s updates, Reuters reports.

The source of the malware vulnerability into the M.E.Doc program is not yet known, but the Kiev based firm is investigation will face criminal charges, police say.

Ukranaian authorities blamed Russia for masterminding the cyber attack, an allegation Russian authorities have denied. The malicious virus is believed to have been served by a hacker before being spread across several companies globally. Many firms are only just recovering from it.

Despite denials by the firm, the fact they ignored repeated warnings makes them appear guilty. Several companies in various parts of the world were attacked by ransomware, believed to have originated from Ukraine.
