Tyson Fury’s Confident Call For Neutral Judges In Wilder Fight

By Tim Parsons-

Tyson Fury has called for neutral judges to referee his upcoming heavyweight title fight with Deontey Wilder later this year. The unbeaten heavyweight who meets WBC champion, Deontey Wilder on a date to be announced this week has expressed concern he may be the victim of a biased judgement because the fight is on American soil.

His concern can be seen as a sign of confidence that he can pull of a surprise win after being written off  ahead of the big fight in Las Vegas after a two and a half year break from the sport that has seen him fight just twice since his return to the ring. Fury did not look very impressive in either fight, but shook off some rust and appears to be planning to go for a major upset, like he did against Wladimir Klitschko.  He said on Twitter: “When I fight @BronzeBomber I want Neutral judges 1 from GB 1 from USA & 1 from a Neutral place. Things have to be fair!!!! @WBCBoxing.”

Fury, 30, revealed that the official announcement for his fight with the WBC heavyweight champion Wilder will be this week.

“As I hear they had wilder ahead in the Ortiz fight before he got stopped!

“This is a massive heavyweight contest. Let’s make it clean cut.“I just want a fair crack!! May the best man win & that’s me #GYPSYKING.”

He added: “Coming to America like Akim. Deontay Wilder will feel the furious one.

Tyson Fury’s decision to face Wilder (40-0(39) has been criticised by many who believe he has taken thee fight too soon. Frank Warren had initially said his man would have four warm up fights before a major crack at anyone at top level, but after talks between Anthony Joshua and Deontey Wilder fell apart, Tyson Fury quickly seized his opportunity for another crack at a version of the heavyweight title belts he held when he outpointed Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 in Germany. Many people believe he has taken this fight too early, but Fury who will come in at around 18 stonnes for the fight if in good shape, will have a two and a half stonnes advantage over Wilder who is experienced at knocking out bigger heavyweights with weight advantage.

The difference here is that Fury is his own man and is a lot more agile and awkward than many of Wilder’s former opponents, and has plenty of fight in him. If he comes in much better shape than the last two fights , he could pull off an upset, because Fury at his best can box and move. He can also throw a flurry of punches, but will have to increase his power on them to give Wilder a tough night. The gypsy man will be under little pressure because most boxing commentators expect him to loose. A determined fighter can be most dangerous when nobody expects them to win. Fury will still need to be in the shape of his life to have any chance of an upset, and it is assumed his team will ensure he gives training his best ahead of the fight.

Fury should really be squeezing one more fight before Wilder, but he and his team will not want to take any risk of defeat. before a major fight like this. Fury would be better of taking the risk of facing one more opponent to shake off more rust which he will earn more money for too. Under current arrangements, if Fury gets stopped easily, it will lead to the conclusion he accepted the fight for money and the rest of the talk was just hype.

It is important for Fury’s health and reputation that he is mentally and physically ready for a world title fight against a knock out artist, he will loose all respect if he doesn’t last against Wilder in Las Vegas. Fury should have shut Bellew up and used him to gain a few rounds, instead of allowing the former cruiser-weight champion to go for a different opponent.Even an opponent like 45 year old Shannon Briggs would have been a good workout for Fury before meeting Wilder, but the problem here again would have been the element of risk. The odds will be stacked against Fury if he goes straight without a fight in between, but that’s what will happen, making a win for him one of the most special ever in heavyweight boxing.

SunSport has revealed that Fury will train at the secretive The Summit Gym at Big Bear Lake in California ahead of the mouthwatering bout. The gym  was designed and built by GGG’s trainer Abel Sanchez for former heavyweight British heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis and Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Stewart. Since then, it has been used by Gennady Golovkin, who trained at the three-storey house in Big Bear ahead of his rematch against Saul Alvarez. Oscar De La Hoya also trained at The Summit ahead of his fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2008.
