Theresa May’s Problematic Choice of Boris Johnson.

By Gavin Mackintosh

Theresa May  will be criticized for her choice of electing Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary.

May started her post as Prime Minister with a brilliant speech at Downing Street, emphasizing a positive plan to unite the country and look after the underprivileged.

theresa mayHer promise to create a country that works for everyone was an exciting sound bite  great for Britain and everything that represents British ideals. Yet, her choice in making Boris Johnson Foreign Secretary has surprised many.

One reason for concern is Johnson’s track record in relation to dealing with Foreign affairs. Some in Westminster
don’t believe he has the diplomatic skills to execute the post effectively, citing a negligent attitude to things at the time.

Despite Johnson being a man of many accomplishments in the political arena, diplomacy is not believed to be one of  his strong points. Theresa May’s choice of Johnson may prove more problematic for her than she contemplated.

May’s election of Johnson was a positive gesture to the Brexit campaigner who had his eyes on the Prime ministers job.

Boris Johnson was within inches of the job until his negligence in following up with his promise to send a tweet confirming promised positions once he becomes prime minister, cost him the job.

May overlooked the grave weaknesses of the former Mayor of London when she gave him the hugely challenging task of being the Secretary of Foreign Affairs. She took a huge risk that may turn out to be disastrous for her government.

For Boris Johnson, it is an amazing opportunity for one who was in the political  wilderness not long ago, with most of his acquired credentials in diverse offices at stake. He may make something good out of it, but there will many hurdles to climb.

Johnson may need to make a number of apologies to certain governments before he can deliver that diplomatic office efficiently. But the question is whether he has the diplomatic skills to handle that, or if in fact, he is aware if his many flaws and weaknesses.

A lot of strength and political wisdom will be asked of the former Mayor if London if he is to do a good job here.
