Several British Railway Trains Cancelled Over Record Heat Waves

By Sammie Jones-

Trains have been cancelled in the Uk after Britain recorded the hottest day on record that has seen people out in their element.

Britain  is basking in seriously hot temperatures on the the hottest July day since records began in the UK after temperatures reached more than 36.9C as a quarter of trains faced being cancelled during the afternoon commute.

According to the Met Office the mercury had hit 36.9C – making today the hottest July day in the UK since records began. Commuters were urged to stay at home on Thursday if possible, but many of those planning to make the return journey from London will notice up to 25 percent of their services cancelled. The cancellations are occurring because the rail network have not been programmed to cope with this level of heat , according to Network Rail’s group director Nick King, who spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Thursday morning that the rail network was not engineered to cope with temperatures as high as 38C.

He said: “What we’re saying is as a consequence of the record temp, we have to react to that because our tracks will expand quite significantly. That gives a potential for unsafe situations like buckled tracks.”
