Scottish Covid Inquiry: Female Nurses Were Provided Face Masks For Men

By Tony O’Reilly-

The Scottish Covid Inquiry has unveiled troubling revelations about the distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the pandemic, with female nurses in Scotland frequently provided with face masks designed for men.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) disclosed to the inquiry that this discrepancy in PPE provision left many nurses grappling with ill-fitting masks, potentially compromising their safety on the frontline.

Colin Pullman, the director of RCN Scotland, underscored the staggering inadequacy of PPE allocated to its members, citing instances where nurses were compelled to reuse equipment not intended for such purposes due to shortages in supplies.

“Nursing is a predominantly female profession, and many of the masks were not designed in smaller sizes, so we had huge issues at times,” remarked Pullman, highlighting the gendered dimension of the PPE crisis.

Amid mounting concerns, the RCN emphasized that the provision of adequate PPE could have mitigated the risk of NHS staff contracting Covid-19.

However, the shortage and substandard quality of protective gear exacerbated the peril faced by frontline healthcare workers, amplifying the urgency of addressing systemic deficiencies in PPE distribution.

Norman Provan, the associate director of RCN Scotland, further elucidated the dire circumstances faced by nurses, revealing the emergence of a hierarchy of PPE provision within hospitals.

While those in intensive care received sufficient equipment, nurses on general wards grappled with subpar protective gear, with some resorting to gowns akin to “repurposed bin bags.”

Provan stressed that this discrepancy significantly heightened the risk of Covid transmission among nurses, lamenting the avoidable infections that ensued due to inadequate protection.

Moreover, the inquiry uncovered unsettling assertions regarding the dismissal of concerns about airborne transmission by the Scottish government during the pandemic.

Despite the RCN’s advocacy for acknowledging Covid-19 as airborne, Scottish ministers purportedly favored the narrative of droplet transmission, disregarding crucial insights that could have informed more effective public health strategies.

The inquiry’s revelations shed light on the harrowing experiences of healthcare workers during the pandemic, highlighting the imperative of rectifying systemic deficiencies in PPE distribution and heeding expert recommendations to safeguard frontline workers.
