A 13-year-old girl has been charged with attempting to murder two teachers and a fellow pupil in a school playground stabbing.

.Pupils at Amman Valley School, also known as Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, went into lockdown just after 11.20am on Wednesday following the attack at the end of morning break in Carmarthenshire

The episode shocked the community and raised urgent questions about school safety and the factors contributing to such violence among youth.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, leaving two teachers, identified as Darrel Campbell and Liz Hopkin, along with a pupil, injured with knife wounds.

Fortunately, all three victims have been discharged from the hospital and are recovering at home. However, the psychological and emotional impact of the attack remains deeply unsettling.

Amidst the chaos, Darrel Campbell, a veteran teacher of 40 years, demonstrated remarkable courage by intervening swiftly to address the unfolding crisis.

His brother, Cefin Campbell, a member of the Welsh Senedd, commended his actions, highlighting the instinctive response of a dedicated educator facing an unprecedented threat.

Campbell’s selfless act underscores the immense pressure teachers face in safeguarding their students and colleagues in today’s educational environments.

Among the injured teachers is Fiona Elias, the deputy head, described as a beloved figure within the school community. Her colleague, Liz Hopkin, a special needs teacher, also suffered injuries in the assault.

The profound impact of the incident on these educators underscores the broader ramifications of violence within educational settings, extending beyond physical harm to inflict emotional and psychological trauma.

In the aftermath of the attack, law enforcement swiftly responded, apprehending a 13-year-old girl at the scene, who has since been charged with three counts of attempted murder.

Additionally, a 15-year-old boy was arrested following concerns over messages shared on social media referencing the incident, prompting authorities to investigate potential links between the two incidents.

The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized charges against the 13-year-old assailant, including attempted murder and possession of a bladed article on school premises.

In response to the incident, Ysgol Dyffryn Aman implemented a lockdown, with the headteacher, James Durbridge, commending the students’ composed response during the ordeal.

However, the incident has prompted broader reflections on school safety protocols and the provision of support for students, staff, and parents in the aftermath of traumatic events.

In a statement on the school’s website, headteacher James Durbridge said on Wednesday it had been a “very difficult day” for the school.

“It goes without saying that my thoughts are with the three individuals and their families, who have been affected by today’s incident,” he said.

“I wish to commend all staff and pupils for their calm and mature response during today’s lockdown.

“We are proud to have witnessed pupils embodying the school’s core values while supporting their peers and staff.”
