Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali(pictured) faces further scrutiny as the Football Association (FA) charges him with misconduct over alleged breaches of betting rules.
The 23-year-old, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for a staggering £55 million, is currently serving a 10-month ban imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for similar violations.
The FA alleges that Tonali placed 50 bets on matches between August 12 and October 12, 2023, during his time as a Newcastle player. These charges are separate from the ones that led to his ban issued by the FIGC, which stemmed from bets placed on matches involving his former teams, Brescia and Milan.
Tonali’s current ban, extending worldwide following FIFA’s endorsement of the FIGC’s request, prohibits him from playing until August and rules him out of participation in Euro 2024. Despite the allegations, Newcastle United has expressed support for Tonali, affirming that he continues to cooperate fully with investigations.
In response to the charges, Newcastle United stated, “Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club’s full support.”
Tonali’s ban includes participation in a therapeutic plan aimed at addressing gambling addiction, involving public appearances in Italy to educate young players about the dangers of gambling.
While barred from competitive matches, Tonali remains eligible to train with his Newcastle teammates.
However, the midfielder’s career with the club has been hampered, having made only 12 appearances under manager Eddie Howe before his suspension.’
Tonali has until April 5 to respond to the FA’s charges, with the outcome of the investigation yet to be determined.
