Kirklees Leaders Approve Increase In Property Rents From April

Senior leaders in Kirklees have approved a 1.5% increase in council property rents from April 5.

The decision by Kirklees Council’s decision-making Cabinet today will drive tenant’s rents by £71.18 a week.

The Cabinet plan to spend £11.8m on  improving over 120 unclassified roads across the borough. Work is set to begin in the spring with a hoped-for completion date of March 2023.

The Council also announced an annual uplift on extra care services (intensive housing management that regulates extra care schemes and the provision of a housing-related support service to tenants to help them maintain their tenancies) will be 2.75% .

It includes extra care services (night time security, which provides a staff presence in extra care schemes overnight and to respond to emergency calls made by tenants during the night) will go up by 2.2%.

Also included in the long term plans are the most expensive projects on the list are Carr  Upper Cumberworth in Denby Dale ward (costing £397,691); Halifax Old Road from C664 Willow Lane to C6107 Spaines Road in Greenhead ward (£342,219); and Bradley Boulevard from Ashbrow Road to New House Road in Ashbrow ward (£341,330).

Council members also approved a £7m loan to create a multi-million pound entertainment complex within Huddersfield’s Kingsgate Centre – including a multiplex cinema.

The money is to be sourced from the council’s Property Investment Fund (PIF) – a £25m war chest to put towards regeneration in the borough

Work is scheduled to start on the new scheme this summer, and is due to be complete by the end of 2022.

The Kingsgate development marks the latest stage of the so-called Huddersfield Blueprint – a £250m masterplan to regenerate and rejuvenate Huddersfield town centre.
