Government’s Commendable Plan For Queen Platinum Jubilee Book Distribution To Primary Schools

The Department for Education is considering paying for the production of a commemorative book marking the Queen’s platinum jubilee that it can send out to primary schools.

The Department made an announcement notifying the market of its intention to run a procurement to produce the commemorative book for primary school children by May 2022.

The DfE also expressed its desire to commission resources for primary and secondary school teachers to “assist them in delivering a lesson and/or assembly on the Queen and her reign” in the run-up to jubilee celebrations. Lessons on the Queen are a good opportunity for children to be given a history lesson on the Monarch which could also be educational if pupils are also exercised in writing and presentation.

Learning the history of the Monarch is also an opportunity for the primary school pupils to passionately exercise their minds in taking in information in detail, especially where they are tested for it. The book will likely contain information about the queen’s age when she was first crowned(27), what the ceremony was like, and various events that took place in her first year as monarch.  It will also be expected to have plenty of detail about her functions in the several decades since this, providing children with a lot of information about Her Majesty the Queen and her long reign.

The Department Of Education did not state what age of children in primary school will begin reading the book, but it is expected to be spread across all ages with the volume of material used varying according to age.

The government has scheduled an additional bank holiday for a four-day “weekend of celebrations” in early June 2022 when the Queen will celebrate her 70th year as a British Monarch.

The notice says the contractor can be one organisation or a group of “economic operators”. It is “keen” to get feedback from suppliers, so is holding a market engagement webinar on Friday.

Geoff Barton, general secretary of heads’ union ASCL, said the idea seemed like “a good one” as the jubilee is an opportunity for children to think about the United Kingdom’s history.

“It’s also a chance for young people to join in a national celebration and anything which helps them to feel part of that event is something we’d welcome. We look forward to seeing what comes from this procurement exercise.”
