First U.S Congress Member Tests Positive For Cornavirus

The first U.S Congress member has tested positive for the  coronavirus, it has been announced.Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart announced on Wednesday that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The Florida Republican said in a statement that he developed symptoms last Saturday. He in self-quarantine in Washington. He said:

“I want everyone to know that I am feeling much better,” Diaz-Balart said. “However, it is important that everyone take this extremely seriously and follow CDC guidelines in order to avoid getting sick and mitigate the spread of this virus.”

Diaz-Balart explained that he did not leave Washington when the House adjourned on Friday, March 13. He decided not to fly home to Miami because his wife has a preexisting condition that could have put her at higher risk associated with the COVID-19 illness.

It follows the passing of  a second coronavirus response bill  following a supported vote of  90-8 despite worries by many Republicans about a temporary new employer mandate to provide sick leave to workers who get COVID-19. The measure is also designed to make diagnostic tests for the virus free. Over 201,500 people worldwide  have been infected with the new coronavirus and the number of deaths from the outbreak continues to rise. Officials are attempting to contain the COVID-19 outbreak .

14 other lawmakers have announced steps to self-quarantine or isolate themselves as a precaution after coming into contact with an infected individual.
