Elon Musk loses $33bn after costly midterm elections as Tesla and Space X Shares slide

World’s richest man suffers major financial setback following Democratic victories, but his extraordinary fortune still dwarfs that of his closest billionaire rivals.

Elon Musk has suffered a staggering $33 billion reduction in his personal fortune following the Democrats’ sweeping victories in the US midterm elections, as falling shares in Tesla and SpaceX exposed the potential financial consequences of his expensive political involvement.

The world’s richest man saw his estimated wealth fall to $865 billion by Wednesday’s market close, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. The decline followed a sell-off in shares connected to his business empire, with both Tesla and SpaceX losing more than 3% of their value.

Despite the extraordinary losses, Musk remains comfortably ahead of every other billionaire on the planet. His closest rival, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has an estimated fortune of $375 billion, leaving Musk approximately $490 billion richer.

The figures underline the extraordinary scale of Musk’s wealth, but the latest setback raises questions about the relationship between his political activities, business interests and financial fortunes.

Musk reportedly spent at least $446 million supporting Republican candidates and political groups ahead of the November midterm elections. His financial backing included approximately $224 million directed towards Republican candidates and organisations in Texas, a state particularly important to his business operations. However, the election results delivered a significant setback for Republicans.

Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race, while Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott. The victories represented a major political shift in a state that has traditionally been a Republican stronghold. The outcome was particularly significant because Texas is home to major parts of his corporate empire.

Tesla operates its principal US manufacturing facility, Gigafactory Texas, near Austin. The company also has plans for Terafab, a major semiconductor manufacturing project in the area. SpaceX, meanwhile, operates its Starbase launch facility in southern Texas, where it is developing and testing its Starship rocket system. The election results therefore have potential implications extending beyond Washington’s political corridors.

The immediate financial consequences were reflected in the stock market.Tesla and SpaceX shares both fell by more than 3% on Wednesday, removing close to $100 billion from their combined market value. Because Musk holds substantial interests in both companies, movements in their share prices can have an enormous impact on his personal wealth.

Unlike most wealthy individuals, whose fortunes are spread across a broad collection of investments, Musk’s net worth is heavily influenced by the performance and valuations of a relatively small number of major businesses. That concentration can produce spectacular gains when investors are optmistic, but it also leaves him exposed when confidence weakens. The latest decline illustrates how quickly fortunes can change, even at the highest levels of global wealth.

Political consequences for Musk’s businesses

The Democratic victories could also create a more challenging political environment for Musk’s companies. Incoming Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa has pledged an immediate moratorium on new data centres, a policy that could become relevant to Musk’s ambitions involving artificial intelligence and large-scale computing infrastructure. The details and eventual scope of any such moratorium remain important questions.

Democratic control of both chambers of Congress will also give the party greater opportunities to investigate technology companies, examine federal contracts and scrutinise the relationship between major corporations and government officials.

Tesla and SpaceX have significant interests in federal policy, particularly in areas including electric vehicle incentives, aerospace contracts, regulatory approvals and government-supported technology programmes. Any substantial change in the regulatory or political environment could therefore have consequences for their future operations.

However, it would be premature to conclude that the election results alone will determine the companies’ commercial prospects. Both businesses operate in highly competitive industries, and their future valuations will continue to depend on financial performance, technology development and investor confidence.

Musk responded to the Republican defeats on his social media platform X with characteristic sarcasm. Joking about his political involvement, he suggested that his supposed “election-interfering space lasers” had failed.

He also remarked that SpaceX’s plans to develop data centres in orbit were looking increasingly appealing following the Democratic victories in Texas. Although delivered humorously, the comments highlighted the potential tension between Musk’s political ambitions and his business interests.

The billionaire has increasingly become a prominent political figure, using his financial resources and enormous social media following to influence public debate and support candidates aligned with his views. The latest results raise questions about whether such political involvement will ultimately benefit or complicate his commercial interests.

Still the world’s richest man by an extraordinary margin

For all the attention surrounding his $33 billion loss, Musk’s financial position remains almost unimaginable. At an estimated $865 billion, he could theoretically lose another $490 billion and still retain a fortune comparable to that of his closest rival today.

His wealth also exceeds the combined fortunes of several other technology billionaires, including Bezos and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Nevertheless, the latest decline demonstrates that even the world’s richest individual is not insulated from political uncertainty or market volatility. With Tesla and SpaceX shares reportedly continuing to trade lower on Thursday, further reductions in his estimated wealth remain possible.

Musk’s extraordinary fortune remains intact. But the midterm elections have provided a reminder that political influence, corporate interests and billionaire wealth do not always move in the same direction.
