Russell Brand rape trial hears that former comedian was ruthless calculatedand manipulative

Russell Brand was a “ruthless, calculated and manipulative” sexual predator who expected his every desire to be satisfied, prosecutors have told a jury as the comedian’s trial on rape and sexual assault charges opened at Southwark Crown Court.

In a forceful opening statement on Wednesday, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC, alleged that Brand used his charm, humour and celebrity status to pursue women, disregarding their objections and the consequences of his alleged actions. The prosecution’s description of him as a “sexual predator” was part of its case against the 51-year-old, who denies all the charges.

Brand faces seven charges involving six women: three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault. The allegations relate to incidents said to have occurred between 1999 and 2009, a period during which his career developed from stand-up comedy into television presenting, acting and Hollywood films.

Karmy-Jones told jurors that the six women did not know one another and had come forward independently. Their paths had crossed Brand’s through employment, work-related social events or performances at which he appeared. The alleged incidents took place in a range of locations, including a hotel room, workplaces, a bar’s toilet cubicle and Brand’s home.

“His desire, his strong desire, for some form of sexual contact was indiscriminate and voracious,” the prosecutor said, describing the behaviour the prosecution intends to establish. She alleged that Brand could be charming and likeable when it suited him, but could also be demanding and entitled.

“He was ruthless, he was calculating, he was manipulative and, the prosecution say, he was a sexual predator,” Karmy-Jones told the court.

The prosecution alleges that some women explicitly protested or said no, while others had little opportunity to react to his advances. According to Karmy-Jones, their responses did not deter him. She told the jury that his alleged overriding concern was satisfying his own sexual desires, rather than considering the women’s wishes or how they were left feeling.

The first allegation outlined in court concerns an alleged rape in a hotel room during a Labour Party conference in Bournemouth in 1999. Karmy-Jones said a witness, Mark Pinheiro, recalled Brand being desperate to have sex before the group left the conference.

The prosecutor alleged that Brand approached the woman, told her what she needed to hear and manipulated the situation to have sex with her without her consent. She also told jurors that Brand later described the encounter to Pinheiro, saying things “might have got a little out of hand”. These claims form part of the prosecution’s account and have yet to be tested against the defence.

Karmy-Jones also referred to comments attributed to people who knew Brand earlier in his career, describing him as impulsive and intensely focused on sex. She said the jury must consider the alleged offences in the context of the period when Brand was aged approximately 24 to 33, rather than judging the case solely by the man now sitting in the dock.

The prosecution said the women had not reported the allegations to police at the time for various reasons. They came forward after a television programme and a press report in 2023 carried separate allegations against Brand from people who are not complainants in this trial.

Brand, who has pleaded not guilty to every charge, arrived at court expressing concern but also hope about the proceedings. “Today I feel blessed,” he told reporters, adding that he hoped the process would lead to “good outcomes for everybody involved”.

Inside the courtroom, he sat in a dark suit and white scarf, staring ahead towards the judge’s bench. His wife, Laura, was present and was seen occasionally smiling warmly at him.

The trial is expected to last approximately six weeks. The jury will hear the prosecution’s evidence and the defence’s response before deciding whether the charges have been proved beyond reasonable doubt. The exact total number of witnesses expected to testify has not been confirmed in the information available, although six women are central to the allegations.

The case is likely to attract intense public scrutiny, but its outcome must rest on evidence rather than celebrity, reputation or the strength of the prosecution’s language. Brand is entitled to the presumption of innocence, and the allegations remain unproven unless established in court.

The challenge for the prosecution is to demonstrate that the alleged incidents amount to criminal offences and that the evidence supports each charge. For the defence, the task is to contest that case. The jury must ultimately decide which account withstands scrutiny.

The opening address has set out a stark accusation against one of Britain’s best-known entertainers. Over the coming weeks, the court will determine whether the evidence supports the prosecution’s portrayal of a man who allegedly placed his own desires above consent—or whether the charges can be disproved.
