US actress Selma Blair has been issued a summons accusing her of assault following an alleged altercation aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to New York, according to federal law enforcement officials. The incident reportedly left two flight attendants injured and prompted an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Blair, 54, best known for her roles in Legally Blonde, Cruel Intentions and Hellboy, was arrested after the aircraft landed at John F Kennedy International Airport. Her representative said the actress had experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged behaviour. She received medical attention after landing and was reported to be in stable condition.
A federal law enforcement source told the BBC that Blair had been issued a summons for assault within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States. She is expected to appear before a petty violation court in Brooklyn, New York, although no hearing date had been announced. The allegations have not been established in court.
The incident occurred at approximately 23:00 local time aboard Delta Flight 938. Airport officials said they responded to reports of a physically abusive passenger. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that two flight attendants reported injuries, with one taken to hospital for further evaluation.
According to reports cited by CBS News, the flight crew allegedly restrained Blair during the incident. Audio obtained by the broadcaster reportedly captured the pilot requesting medical assistance, mentioning a bloody nose and bite marks.
Delta said law enforcement officers responded when the aircraft arrived at JFK Airport. The airline stressed that the incident had not disrupted the flight and reiterated its commitment to the safety of passengers and crew.
Previous Incident and Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis
The latest allegations have renewed attention on Blair’s health and a previous in-flight incident in 2016. On that occasion, she apologised publicly after an outburst aboard a flight from Mexico to Los Angeles, explaining that she had accidentally mixed alcohol with medication, blacked out and behaved in ways she deeply regretted.
In 2018, Blair disclosed that she had multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic neurological condition that can affect movement, balance and other bodily functions. She later spoke about the impact of the diagnosis on her acting career, saying she had been forced to stop working. In 2021, she announced that her condition was in remission.
However, neither her medical history nor the earlier incident establishes what caused the latest reported behaviour. Her representative has attributed the alleged conduct to a medical emergency, but further details about its nature have not been confirmed.
The investigation now centres on the circumstances aboard the flight and the evidence supporting the assault allegation. As the legal process moves forward, Blair remains entitled to the presumption of innocence
