Germany’s Far Right Thanks Billionaire Ally Elon Musk for Election Victory

By Ben kerrigan-

Germany’s far right group, the AFD, has won a stunning election victory, and publicly thanked its billionaire ally, Elon Musk, exposed something bigger than a political realignment:. Elon Musk is no longer merely applauding Germany’s far right from afar. Its leaders now see him as a potential partner.

That detail may ultimately prove more revealing than the result itself. The Alternative for Germany, or AfD, secured almost 44% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, humiliating Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats and putting the far right within striking distance of governing a German state for the first time since the Nazi era. The AfD won 39 of the 83 seats, leaving it just short of an outright majority, but it is now attempting to find a route into government. Merz has ruled out cooperation.

Then came the message from Elon Musk. Musk congratulated the AfD with two words in German: “Well done!” Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD’s victorious lead candidate, responded by thanking Musk for his support and for his “clear and highly important perspective” on Germany’s political future. Siegmund went further. If the AfD takes control of the state government, he said, the party would welcome the opportunity for “strong and constructive cooperation” with Musk.

That is not simply an exchange of congratulations. It is a political relationship becoming explicit. Musk’s defenders can reasonably argue that he is entitled to support whichever political movement he chooses.

The issue is not whether Musk has the legal right to endorse the AfD, because he does. The issue is what his repeated intervention means, — and why the AfD itself believes his support matters. Musk has repeatedly promoted the AfD, calling it Germany’s “only hope” and using his enormous audience to urge Germans to support the party. He has also given AfD leader Alice Weidel a global platform through an extended conversation on X, the social-media network Musk owns.

This is therefore not a one-off endorsement. It is sustained political advocacy. And it is advocacy coming from one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential individuals, whose personal platform reaches an audience far beyond Germany.

The AfD clearly believes that influence has political value. Its response after Sunday’s election suggests something else, too. the party does not see Musk merely as a celebrity supporter. It sees him as someone with whom it could potentially do business.

Most analysts agree that supporting a far-right party does not, by itself, constitute irrefutable proof that an individual is personally far right. A voter might support a party because of one policy, dissatisfaction with another party or a particular political issue without embracing its entire ideology.

But Musk’s record is considerably more extensive than a single vote or endorsement. He has repeatedly promoted the AfD, described it as Germany’s best or only hope, intervened directly in its political debate, and continued to celebrate its electoral advances.

Te world’s richest man has also repeatedly and enthusiastically aligned himself with a party widely identified as far right, and whose regional organisation in Saxony-Anhalt is classified as extremist by German domestic intelligence, but hat does not make every aspect of Musk’s ideology identical to the AfD’s. However,  it makes describing his politics as increasingly aligned with the European far right a defensible conclusion.

What does “far right” actually mean?

“Far right” is not simply a synonym for “conservative.” The term generally describes political movements substantially beyond the mainstream right, often combining intense nationalism with hostility toward immigration or multiculturalism. In its more extreme forms, far-right politics can reject liberal pluralism, stigmatize minorities, and challenge democratic institutions, or equality before the law.

The AfD’s political programme places immigration and asylum at the centre of its politics, and advocates major restrictions on migration. Its positions on Russia, Ukraine, national identity and social policy have also placed it far outside Germany’s traditional political mainstream. Its regional branch in Saxony-Anhalt ,has been classified as extremist by German intelligence- a  context is essential when assessing Musk’s relationship with the party. musk has  repeatedly lent his influence to a movement that Germany’s political establishment has spent years attempting to isolate.

One political member of the AFD party, told The Eye Of Media,Com on the conditioon of anonymity : ”there is a legitimate democratic argument for Musk’s political involvement because free societies do not require citizens to surrender their political opinions because they become wealthy. Musk has the same basic right to political expression as anyone else, but he is not an ordinary political participant.

However, Musk owns X, one of the world’s most influential social-media platforms. He possesses extraordinary wealth, a global following and direct access to political leaders. He has also become a prominent ally of Donald Trump, and that combination raises a question that extends well beyond Musk:

What happens to democratic politics when an individual with immense personal wealth also controls a major communications platform and uses that platform to promote political movements abroad? The answer cannot simply be “nothing.” Nor should it automatically be “this is illegitimate.”

After Musk’s conversation with AfD leader,  Alice Weidel, Hofmann, characterized Musk as a “political amateur”, arguing that he lacks detailed knowledge of European political systems and the AfD’s programme. She also said Musk’s intervention nevertheless benefits the AfD because the enormous attention surrounding him gives the party valuable exposure during an election campaign.

When asked about Musk’s influence in the election victory, ,Wiedel today  told The Eye Of Media: ”What happens to democratic politics when an individual with immense personal wealth also controls a major communications platform and uses that platform to promote political movements abroad? The answer cannot simply be “nothing.” Nor should it automatically be “this is illegitimate.” The legitimate concern is concentration of influence.

Musk can speak The AfD can campaign, voters can decide. But when the owner of a global social-media platform repeatedly uses his enormous reach to amplify one political movement, questions about transparency, platform power and democratic accountability become unavoidable.

A historic breakthrough — and a new test for Germany

It would be a mistake to credit Musk with the AfD’s 44% result because Germany’s political transformation did not begin with a billionaire’s social-media posts. The AfD’s rise reflects a variety of forces and influences. first of all, dissatisfaction with established parties, economic insecurity, anger over immigration, frustration with the federal government and a broader political shift in parts of eastern Germany.

The AfD’s victory is historic precisely because winning an election is not the same as taking power. The party still needs a governing path. Its 39 seats fall short of the 42 required for a majority in the 83-seat parliament, and Germany’s mainstream parties continue to reject cooperation with A party once treated primarily as a political outlier is now the largest force in a German state.

French officials have warned that the result represents a grave moment for Europe, amid concern over rising nationalism and xenophobia.
