The long-repeated claim that human beings use only 10% of their brains has no scientific basis, and a new report in the Times of India has again brought the enduring myth under scrutiny. The latest evidence does not suggest that a hidden 90% of the human brain is waiting to be activated; instead, decades of neuroscience show that different parts of the brain are continually engaged in different ways, with their activity changing according to what we are doing, thinking, feeling or even sleeping.
The “10%” claim has nevertheless proved extraordinarily difficult to dislodge. It has been repeated in popular books, motivational programmes, films and everyday conversation, usually with the suggestion that humans possess vast untapped intellectual abilities. The appeal is obvious: if only a small fraction of the brain is being used, the remaining 90% appears to offer an enormous reservoir of intelligence, creativity and memory that could theoretically be unlocked.
However, there is no established scientific measurement showing that the human brain operates at 10% capacity. Modern neuroscience does not divide the brain into a functioning 10% and a dormant 90%. Brain activity is distributed across interconnected regions and networks, and the level of activity changes according to the task being performed. Brain-imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging have provided researchers with increasingly sophisticated ways of observing these changes. The evidence does not reveal a vast, permanently inactive portion of the brain. Scientific American’s examination of the 10% claim found that there is no credible scientific evidence to support the idea that humans use only a tenth of their brains, tracing the belief instead to longstanding misunderstandings about human potential and early neuroscience.
This does not mean that every part of the brain is equally active at every moment. That would be another misunderstanding. A person reading, walking, remembering an event, speaking, sleeping or solving a problem will recruit different combinations of neural networks. Some areas may show greater activity during one task and less during another. Less activity is not the same thing as no function, according to prominent scientist in India. That contrast is central to the new Times of India report by Dr Pankaj Agarwal, Director of Neurology, Stroke and Neurocritical Care at Gleneagles Hospital Parel in Mumbai, explaining that different parts of the brain contribute to functions ranging from movement and sensation to memory, speech, emotion and the regulation of vital processes. His assessment is consistent with the broader neurological evidence that the brain operates as a highly interconnected system, rather than as a collection of nine-tenths of unused tissue.
The history of the myth is more complicated than the popular version suggests. One frequently cited source is the American psychologist William James, who wrote in the early twentieth century about people’s failure to realise their full mental potential. James was discussing the limits of human achievement and unused capacity, not claiming that 90% of the physical brain was biologically inactive.
The point was gradually lost as the idea entered popular culture. A particularly important step came in 1936, when journalist Lowell Thomas wrote the foreword to Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. Thomas attributed to William James the proposition that people developed only a small proportion of their latent mental ability. Over time, this idea became increasingly associated with the much more specific — and scientifically unsupported — figure of 10% of the brain. Scientific American’s historical account. A statement about unrealised human potential is relatively abstract; a claim that 90% of the brain is unused is simple, dramatic and memorable. It also creates the possibility of a compelling promise: activate the unused portion and extraordinary abilities might follow. Popular entertainment subsequently helped cement the idea. Films have used the supposed “other 90%” as a premise for stories about enhanced intelligence, memory and physical ability. One of the strongest arguments against the 10% claim comes from the consequences of brain injury. Damage to different parts of the brain can affect movement, speech, memory, sensation, behaviour and other functions. The fact that injuries in many different regions can produce significant neurological consequences is difficult to reconcile with the idea that most of the brain is functionally redundant.
Brain imaging provides another important line of evidence. Researchers can observe changes in activity across numerous regions as people perform different tasks. Such scans should not be interpreted as showing that brightly illuminated areas are “used” while everything else is useless. Rather, they show differences in activity between particular conditions. The brain is active even when a particular region is not showing the greatest change in a given experiment. The same principle applies during sleep. Sleep is not a state in which the brain simply shuts down. Neural activity continues, although its organisation and intensity change. The brain remains engaged in processes essential to memory, regulation and other functions.
This is why the language surrounding the myth matters. Asking what percentage of the brain we “use” is itself an oversimplification. There is no scientifically meaningful single number that captures the brain’s constantly changing activity. The new report is timely because the misconception remains remarkably persistent. Its central conclusion — that humans do not use only 10% of their brains — is strongly supported by existing scientific evidence. however, t does not present evidence for a new neurological discovery showing that an additional 90% can be activated. There is genuine scientific interest in how learning alters neural connections, how the brain adapts after injury, how cognitive performance can be improved and how different neural networks interact. None of those areas requires the existence of a dormant 90%. Indeed, the more accurate scientific story is arguably more fascinating.

Its extraordinary capabilities emerge from the activity and interaction of billions of neurons and the networks connecting them. Human potential therefore depends not on unlocking a mysterious unused section of the brain, but on understanding and developing the extraordinarily complex system we already possess. After more than a century of repetition, the most important correction is also the simplest. There is no hidden 90% of the human brain waiting to be switched on. The enduring mystery is not why we use so little of our brain, but how such a complex organ can accomplish so much.
