The remains of a U.S. Army soldier who disappeared during multinational military exercises in Morocco have been recovered after an intensive week long search operation involving hundreds of American and Moroccan personnel. The discovery has brought partial closure to a tragedy that unfolded during the annual African Lion military exercises, one of the largest joint training operations conducted on the African continent.
The soldier, identified as 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., 27, was reported missing alongside another U.S. soldier after the pair vanished near the Cap Draa Training Area outside the coastal city of Tan-Tan in southwestern Morocco.

According to U.S. military officials, the soldiers were off duty and taking part in a recreational hike near ocean cliffs when the incident occurred on May 2. Authorities believe they accidentally fell into the Atlantic Ocean.
Moroccan military search teams recovered Key’s remains along the shoreline on May 9, roughly one mile from the location where the soldiers were believed to have entered the water. The second soldier remains missing, and search efforts continue despite difficult ocean and terrain conditions.
The recovery came after an extensive multinational search mission involving more than 600 personnel, including divers, naval vessels, helicopters, drones, canine teams, and aircraft from the United States, Morocco, and partner nations participating in African Lion 2026.

Search crews spent days combing a vast stretch of coastline, underwater caves, and rough Atlantic waters in hopes of locating the missing troops.
The incident has cast a shadow over African Lion 2026, a large-scale military exercise led by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and hosted across Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal.
The annual drills involve thousands of troops from more than 30 countries and are designed to strengthen military coordination, regional security cooperation, and crisis response capabilities throughout Africa and the Mediterranean region.
Military officials emphasized that the soldiers were not actively participating in training exercises at the time of the accident. Instead, they had reportedly gone hiking after the day’s scheduled drills had ended. Initial reports indicate that one soldier may have slipped or fallen into the ocean, prompting another soldier to attempt a rescue before both were swept away by strong waves and currents.
Massive Search Operation Across Morocco’s Coast
The disappearance triggered an immediate emergency response from both U.S. and Moroccan authorities. AFRICOM confirmed that coordinated ground, air, and maritime rescue operations began shortly after the soldiers were reported missing during an evening headcount.
The search operation quickly evolved into one of the largest rescue missions associated with African Lion exercises in recent years. Moroccan naval units, helicopters, and mountain rescue teams joined U.S. military aircraft and specialised search crews to scan rugged coastal cliffs and turbulent waters near Cap Draa. The region, where the Sahara Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, is known for steep rocky terrain, unpredictable tides, and strong currents.
Satellite technology, unmanned aerial systems, and military divers were deployed as teams searched more than 12,000 square kilometers of land and sea. Reports indicated that underwater caves and narrow coastal formations significantly complicated rescue efforts.
Officials from both countries praised the cooperation between Moroccan and American forces during the operation. AFRICOM said the recovery of Key’s remains reflected the “unwavering commitment” of participating personnel who continued the search under difficult environmental conditions.
The tragedy has also drawn renewed attention to the risks surrounding military deployments and international exercises, even outside formal combat or training scenarios. Recreational incidents involving military personnel stationed abroad are relatively rare but can become highly dangerous in unfamiliar terrain or extreme environmental conditions.
Key had been assigned to the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command and had only recently begun his military career. According to U.S. military statements, he joined the Army in 2023 and became a commissioned officer in 2024. Fellow soldiers and commanders described him as a dedicated officer with strong leadership potential.
The Army has not yet publicly identified the second missing soldier, pending continued search operations and family notifications.
African Lion Exercises Continue Amid Mourning
Despite the ongoing search and recovery efforts, African Lion 2026 has continued in several participating countries. The multinational exercise, first launched in 2004, has grown into the largest U.S.-led military drill in Africa. This year’s edition includes more than 7,000 troops from the United States, NATO allies, and African partner nations.
The exercises involve live-fire training, airborne operations, humanitarian assistance missions, intelligence coordination, and counterterrorism simulations. U.S. military leaders frequently describe the drills as essential for improving readiness and strengthening ties with African allies amid growing security concerns across the Sahel and North Africa.
The deaths and disappearances linked to the exercises have underscored the dangers associated with large-scale deployments. African Lion has previously experienced deadly incidents. In 2012, two U.S. Marines were killed during a helicopter crash in Morocco while participating in the same military exercise.
News of Key’s recovery prompted condolences from military officials and political leaders in both countries. Statements released by AFRICOM and U.S. Army Europe and Africa expressed sympathy to the soldier’s family and pledged continued support during the investigation and recovery process. Moroccan authorities also extended assistance and support to American personnel throughout the operation.
The incident has received widespread attention in both American and international media, highlighting the close military partnership between Washington and Rabat. Morocco remains one of the United States’ longest-standing security partners in Africa and regularly hosts joint military training operations with NATO and allied countries.
Security analysts say the rapid joint response demonstrated the strategic importance of U.S.-Moroccan military cooperation, particularly as instability and extremist threats continue to affect parts of North and West Africa.
However, the focus remains on the ongoing search for the second missing soldier and on honoring the memory of Lt. Key. Search teams continue to patrol the coastline and surrounding waters as officials maintain hope that further recovery efforts may bring additional answers in the coming days.
Military officials said rescue crews are working around the clock despite challenging weather conditions and dangerous ocean currents along Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Helicopters continue conducting aerial sweeps while divers and naval units search areas where strong tides may have carried debris or evidence connected to the disappearance.
Authorities have not indicated when the operation might end, emphasising that every possible effort is being made to locate the missing service member.
Meanwhile, tributes to Lt. Key have continued to emerge from fellow soldiers, military leaders, and community members in the United States. Colleagues described him as a disciplined officer who showed strong leadership early in his military career. Messages of condolence have also spread across social media, where supporters have praised his service and dedication.
The Army is expected to hold memorial ceremonies in the coming weeks as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials from both the United States and Morocco have pledged to cooperate fully throughout the investigation while supporting the families affected by the tragedy.
