Google’s news service encountered a significant outage on Friday afternoon, with numerous users reporting an inability to access updates. The issue began around 1pm on May 31, according to Down Detector, a website that monitors global outages.
Despite Google’s main search engine functioning normally, users clicking on the “news” tab were greeted with an error message stating: “Uh-oh! Something went wrong. Please try again.” This disruption affected users across various platforms, including desktop, iOS, and Android apps.
Social media quickly became a hub for frustrated users. On X, formerly known as Twitter, individuals reported their inability to access news articles through Google News.
The extent of the outage remains unclear, but Down Detector indicated reports of outages not only in the UK and the US but also in other countries, potentially impacting hundreds of millions of people.
As of 2:10pm on Friday, the service still appeared to be down. Google has been approached for comment but has yet to provide any updates on the situation or the cause of the outage.
This incident marks a notable disruption for one of the world’s most widely used news aggregation services, highlighting the dependency on digital platforms for real-time news and information. Users worldwide are eagerly awaiting a resolution and further details from Google regarding the outage.
