Schools across Yorkshire have been given strict rules in relation to fashion dressing. High schools in the county have provided their students with a list of none permissible dressing and haircuts, including nose rings, false nails, suede shoes, ‘tramlines/cat scratches’ in hair, coloured hair, and skinny fit trousers.
Many schools already have a strict uniform policy, but will establishing broader rules in place as from this coming September.
Some schools have issued photos of specific footwear and what to avoid, with many schools warning pupils about going for ‘extreme’ haircuts.
Beckfoot Oakbank school, for instance, has established a set of strict rules to keep its pupils disciplined and focus on their academics.
Formal black leather shoes are part of the uniform requirements conveyed to parents in a letter aimed at ensuring good presentation and academic focus. False nails are prohibited, with one stud earring in each ear and no facial piercings as part of the school rules.
When it comes to hair styles, the school said: “No tramlines, cat scratches or other patterns shaved into the hair or eyebrows.”
It adds: “Only school-issued badges are to be worn on your school uniform.”
The school says: “We are now planning for September and want to ensure that our expectations around school uniforms are as clear as our expectations of the students’ behaviour.”
Black shoes must be worn – and no trainers. Skirts “of an appropriate length.”
Students are only allowed to have one stud earring per ear. No facial piercings are allowed.
As well as wearing black polished shoes, the note to parents insists that “under no circumstances will the wearing of trainers with school uniform be acceptable.” Leggings are not permitted and Piercings should be limited to one small stud in each ear.
False eyelashes and false nails are not allowed. Nails should not be painted except for natural varnish.

All facial jewellery or visible body piercing is inadmissible. Hair should be “appropriate to a place of work”, ie, no unusual styles or colours, shavings or patterns.
Belts, if worn, should be plain black “and not worn as a ‘fashion statement’ over jumpers or shirts,” the school authorities say.
The school adds: “To avoid embarrassment or unnecessary cost, if a student or parent is in any doubt about a hairstyle, or the purchase of an item of clothing, they should speak with their Head of Year before going ahead. Students will be asked to rectify any hairstyle, or replace any clothing at their expense that is perceived to be unsuitable for school”.
