The Electoral Commission has approved The Independent Group’s application to register as a political party.
The group comprising 11 former Labour and Tory MPs who quit their parties in February have been permitted to put forward candidates in the European elections due to take place on 23 May on the assumption the UK has not left the EU by then.
However, the election watchdog rejected their planned ballot paper logo, forcing the group to have a blank square next to their name. The party were hoping to use a black square with the initials TIG and the hashtag “#Change, but the commission believed it could be misleading to voters because their acronym
The party had two additions to its members Conservative MEPs, Julie Girling and Richard Ashworth confirmed their decision to joining Change UK also in the hope to stand as candidates in the European elections. Another three unnamed candidates are said to have also joined the party. The party claim to have had over of 3,700 applications from people across the United Kingdom wanting to stand as candidates at the European Elections. Essentially, they are pro another Uk referendum.
Ms Girling said she was “fully committed to a People’s Vote on Brexit” and was “looking forward to being able to use my extensive experience as part of the Change UK team”.
The news comes after recent developments that will see Parliament have another chance to break the Brexit deadlock with a vote on whether to maintain a customs union with the European Union.
Despite the three times failure of British prime minister, Theresa May to persuade a majority of the U.K. Parliament to agree to her plan to leave the EU, an extension to Britain’s membership until the end of October means the British public may have to brace themselves for more indecisive outcomes as Parliament tries hard to secure a deal to leave the European Union.
