Ilford South MP, Mike Gapes is considering retirement over alleged anti-semitism within the Labour party.
Mr Gapes, a member of the Labour Party for 50 years is growing sick of the issues of anti-semitism that has dogged the Labour party for a while now.
MP Gapes is reported to have written a Whatsapp message saying he was “not prepared to support” Mr Corbyn, that it was “over” for him and that “all that remains is the timing of my announcement.” It was reported that Mike Gapes had written a Whatsapp message saying he was “not prepared to support” Mr Corbyn, that it was “over” for him and that “all that remains is the timing of my announcement.” The Mp refused to address questions relating to whether he would resign soon, but expressed deep unhappiness about the situation in the Labour Party
He said: “I am extremely unhappy with where the Labour party is at the moment.“I joined the party in 1968 as a strong opponent of anti-Semitism and racism. “Growing up in Ilford, while I’m not Jewish myself, I had a lot of Jewish friends.“The levels of anti-Semitism were quite high then, but I never thought, it never crossed my mind that this issue would become such a virulent poison at the high levels of the Labour Party.
“The doubling down and excusing is not enough. Jeremy Corbyn has to unreservedly apologise to the Jewish community for his personal and previous statements.“It will take us a very long time to move on from this. The MP wants action to repair the damage done to the party’s image and reputation. He also wants the Labour National Executive Committee adopt the full International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of anti-Semitism. Discussions along this lines are set for a meeting next week.
Allegations about Anti-Semitism has troubled the Labour Party for a while now, and efforts to address this in the party does not seem to have solved the problem entirely.
