An inhumane murderer who tortured his Bradford partner at their home before killing her, smirked in the dock as he was told he must serve at least 32 years of a life sentence. His smirk would soon turn to a nightmare as he begins a long sentence for the murder of his partner, Sobhia Khan.
Atual Mustafa was found guilty of murdering Sohbia Khan at their home in Pear Tree Crescent in Normanton.
Mustapha was convicted just after 45 minutes of deliberations.
The court heard that, after Mustafa met “confident, intelligent, bubbly” Ms Khan ,he “lured” her to live with him in Derby.
However, he became increasingly controlling and subjected her to “domestic violence on a savage scale”, eventually killing her.
Khan suffered 36 separate injuries from the serious assault inflicted against her. The court heard an iron was also used on her. The evil brute had previously brutally attacked a woman and changed his name, after being found by a court to be mentally ill and sent to a secure hospital. Khan wasn’t to know of his monstrous past, but should have headed off at the very first sign of violence. Victims of domestic violence often find it difficult to leave their attacking partners, especially where they are dependent on them for residence as in the case of Khan. Those who sense the real potential for danger can seek help and run, but they often don’t.
Mustapha’s sentencing by High Court judge Mrs Justice Sue Carr at Derby Crown Court to life in prison and must serve 32 years as a minimum.
After the hearing, senior investigating officer DCI Emlyn Richards of Derbyshire Constabulary, said: “Mustafa never accepted any responsibility or provided an account of what happened to Sohbia. On the evening of the murder, he booked a plane ticket from Manchester to Islamabad so he clearly believed fleeing the country was an option for him to avoid taking responsibility for his actions.
“His narcissistic and sadistic grooming of Sohbia led her to Derby and within weeks of arriving, she had been tortured over several days and brutally murdered. This included being branded with an iron on three separate sites of her body, being punched, kicked and hit with weapons”.
