Several university students lack future direction, despite being on a degree course.
A number of university students admit to not knowing what line of work they hope to follow after their graduate degrees.
This lack of clarity with respect to their future paths is common among many students from different universities. Sociology, psychology, and philosophy students are most uncertain about their future , according to a survey conducted by the eye of media.com.
The issue was raised with the eye of media.com by one of our readers in early March, but a survey was just completed late last week. We found that
60 percent of Sociology students in three Universities had no idea what they wanted to do after studies.
Psychology
Psychology is a very educational course that enables students to understand how the mind and society generally work. It focus heavily on a mixture of theory and research, giving students a broad academic outlook on the psychological aspects of things. Yet, many students if this worthwhile discipline have no future direction career wise.
75 percent of Psychology students had no idea of what they wanted to do after graduating, and 82 percent of Philosophy students were also in the dark. Our survey was conducted with students from Middlesex, East London, and Queen Mary University.
The figures were an overall percentage of all three Universities, but was actually lower in Queen Mary University where just 35 percent of students were unsure where there graduate degree will lead them.
PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy students showed the highest levels of uncertainty with over 85 percent not clear what career to pursue after graduating. The findings call for more mentoring and direction from teachers and careers advisers to their students.
Most Universities have careers advisers, but a majority of students don’t actually bother to use them. Specific advise needs to be given to students without waiting for them to ask. Only students who really think ahead often consider their future with enough care to actually seek advice.
BEST
A spokesperson from Middlesex University told the eye of media.com ” Middlesex University have made great strides in the intellectual training and academic performance of our students in the last few years.
We do our best to offer guidance with respect to career options, but following your research, we will be taking greater steps to guide students, particularly in the areas of discipline highlighted by your research”.
