Why Kamala Harris’s Swearing Into Biden’s Administration Is A Big Deal

By Gabriel Princewill-

Kamala Harris, a former U.S senator from California has achieved a big deal as the first woman  vice president, and woman of colour to serve as vice president after being sworn in with President Joe Biden in Washington DC.

As the first black person and person of South Asian descent to occupy the honoured role of becoming the highest-ranking woman  to  ever serve in the American government, she has been presented with a momentous opportunity to make her mark in both American history and politics.

A woman of high standing, the path to a future presidential office exists in the world of practical probabilities. If the Democratic party leave their mark, make a  substantial difference, and continue to win elections, Ms Harris could easily find herself as a future president. First, she has to to work well with the new president in overhauling all the inherent shortcomings in the U.S system.

The challenge of quelling the racial divide that has plagued America for decades lies before her, just as much as that of advancing legal reforms where necessary.  Alongside  the task of boosting the recovery of the U.S economy within a reasonable time period,  there is also the battle to bring the coronavirus which has plagued  the country, under control.

Defeating the senseless cult of  white supremacy in some parts of America is one of the objectives Ms Harris will have in conjunction with Joe Biden.

Her new highly exalted position will afford her the opportunity  to engage contentious areas of law which may call for special insight and evaluation.

Kamala Harris’s legal training and vast political experience will stand her in good stead in her endeavour to achieve exploits in the four years ahead of her as Vice president to President Joe Biden. She is deemed to have the attributes and temperament to complement the president well.

Former Prominent Prosecutor

Kamala Harris was a prominent prosecutor, particularly acclaimed  for her forensic questioning of Trump administration officials including Jeff Sessions, and then Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

In 2010, she won the race to become California’s attorney general – beating Republican Steve Cooley by just 0.8 percentage points and becoming the first woman and black person to hold the job.

Her parents who were members of the civil rights movement, met at the University Of California.” She Kamala Harris For The People”- a similar aspiration made by President Biden, who said he will be the president of all Americans.

Harris described herself as a “progressive prosecutor”  during the race for progressive nomination, and said she is an advocate of law enforcement reforms make-up of schools.

Ms Harris attended Howard University, a historically black college in Washington DC, where she studied political science and economics.

After attending law school back in California, she became a prosecutor and was hired as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County in 1990.

She later became district attorney for San Francisco in 2003. During her first three years in the position, the conviction rate in the city jumped from 52% to 67%.

Sworn In

Harris chose to be sworn in using two Bibles, one from the late Thurgood Marshall, the first Black supreme court justice, and one from Regina Shelton, a close family friend who was something like a surrogate mother for Harris and her sister when they were growing up.

“Ready to serve,” was tweeted from her new vice-presidential Twitter account shortly after being sworn in.

Harris’s selection for this most hallowed post is seen as a reflection of  Biden’s grandeur aspiration to establish people of colour and women in powerful positions in his administration, historically occupied by white men .

This incoming administration is notably pursing a notable transformation of Donald Trump’s administration, as it seeks to heal the whole of America.
