Why Deontey Wilder Must Defend Claims He Was Untrainable And Disrespectful

By Gabriel Princewill-

Deontey Wilder is under pressure to defend claims by his former trainer, Mark Breland, has was untrainable, moody, and disrespectful.

Breland, 57,  who trained the former Wbc world champion, was fired by the former world champion, after he lost his title to Tyson Fury last December.

Breland went an extra mile on Tuesday to lift the lid on the behind the scenes activities in the Bronze Bombers boxing camp, undermining Wilder in the process.  The aggrieved old time former boxing champion and trainer ,  accused the former world boxing champion of occasionally being disrespectful, none compliant in training, and often late to the gym.

Breland  was  sacked  by Wilder, after the heavy handed American  lost his Wbc crown to the awkward and unbeaten gypsy king, Tyson Fury, last December. Fury ended Wilder’s reign in 7 rounds.

The emphatic manner of the defeat which saw Breland throw in the towel against his fighter’s prior instructions never to ever do so, led to an internal crises.  The  formidable heavyweight whose seeming invincibility evaporated overnight, gave Breland the boot, accusing him of spiking his water and acting against his professional interest. He accused him of being ”disloyal”.

Official head trainer, Jay Deas, expressed his surprise at Breland throwing in the towel. Mr. Deas said : “Mark said something about throwing the towel in. I told him ‘don’t do that’. I didn’t think he should do that. Then I saw the towel go in.

Wilder, whose explanation has been dismissed by critics as akeen to that of a sore looser, maintains he was the victim of foul play. Wilder is serious about his allegation, his fury expressed in the scathing attack against  the integrity of  the man who had trained him for over a decade.

The former world  champ says Breland’s attitude and energy towards him  had been ”off”, leading up to that fight,  and he does not believe he was beaten while his body was functioning normally.

Since Wilder’s defeat, the American has insisted  that his defeat was due to outside and dubiously malicious  interference. As far as Wilder is concerned, the only way Breland didn’t spike his water is if somebody else prepared that water for Breland.

Breland, fed up  with the condemnation and attending embarrassment, came out firing shots at his former protege

Tyson Fury knocks Wilder down en route to 7th round victory.

Expressing frustration over the allegations made against him, Breland said he had become passionate about the friction between himself and Wilder which has now got out of hand.

Official

He said:  “Now you can call this the ‘official’ Mark Breland said. I’ve had enough. I’m going to say some things that were reserved for my autobiography (still buy the book, there’s so much more). I’m going to add a couple pics, one a quote from a daily news reporter where he says ‘Mr. Breland is usually quiet unless it’s something he’s passionate about.’ So true and this is one subject that has me passionate, actually beyond passion!

“So I’m not giving nobody this interview, I’ll use my own platform since I’ve been ‘opened like a can of sardines.’ On the last podcast I was on, damn, they couldn’t even wait till the next show to talk about me. I went on that show following my request with them for NO DEONTAY TALK.

But when you’ve been holding onto something for so long and you’re pissed off about it, obviously anyone can push your buttons and all kinds of shit may come out. But that’s not the environment that I would have chose to speak on.

“So here’s Mark’s take…anyone who thinks I meant I could beat AJ or Deontay’s opponents now at age 57 doesn’t require a response. At my age the only fight I’ll have is the one for my life! I ain’t getting hit no more, I’ve had my share of fights.

Untrainable

Presenting Wilder as a none compliant boxer, Breland indicated that his fighter had become untrainable and distant, adding that he did not even have his personal number. Breland said: “After Deontay became a name in boxing new members did join the team and it got to the point where didn’t/don’t even have my fighter’s phone number. I haven’t spoken to Deontay alone in years. The things that I told Deontay to do had to be ran past Jay.

“Deontay had become untrainable because he was at the point of he know more about boxing than all of us. So teaching a correct jab was not a priority to learn once he continued on his knockout streak. So a coach can only teach someone if they’re willing to learn.

We would wait for the champ for hours before he arrived at the gym and Jay would inform us of his mood. If he had a bad day we had to ‘be quiet’ to not be on the receiving end of ‘his wrath’ according to Jay, in an effort not to be ‘fired.’’Image result for wilder and breland

Importance

And yeah, hitting the bag, jumping rope, and running is not high on the list so if he don’t feel like it he and Jay didn’t seem to understand the importance of those things. So he would make it clear not to ask Deontay twice. If I tried to pull Deontay to the side to tell him what I see, Jay made it clear ‘don’t say nothing, you don’t want to make him mad’.

I’ve watched this man (Deontay) speak to many people disrespectfully and although I’m extremely humble & calm, I’m a man first.

Bang

Wilder had been knocking out his victims with an almighty bang, one after the other, living up to the other half of his nick name, ‘bomber’.

Unfortunately, the night the bomb failed to detonate the Bronze bomber’s most important opponent, all hell broke loose in Wilder’s team with a big bang. Breland derided the quality of Wilder’s opposition, stating he would have beaten them all easily if they were in the same era and the same weight,  He cited Louis Ortiz, as Wilder’s only good win.

He then berated Jay Deas, an articulate and key member of Wilder’s team. Breland says Deas mistreated him during the fall out with Wilder.

Why then did Breland stay on with Wilder if he saw him as a defiant boxer, who treated people disrespectfully, and had a superiority complex when it came to boxing?

“I stayed on the team ‘cause I’ve been there from the beginning and I believed with his power and willingness to learn more, he could be a force in the sport. I never thought anything this insane would take place.

I should not have addressed who had the water because the accusation is so insane,  it doesn’t deserve a reply. Anyone who knows a tiny bit about boxing knows we’re tested before and after a fight so that’s the end of that ludicrous allegation!! And then there’s ‘the gloves.’

Jay Deas Attack

In a veiled attack at Jay Deas, Breland  added fuel to his words.

”To that I say that’s the one time I’m glad Jay treated me like I didn’t matter. So he does all the head trainer aspects, the witness for the hand wrapping, the press interviews, everything where a camera is involved, except hand wraps, I’m the one responsible for that. I’m not sure if (Deas) knows, in all those years I can’t recall seeing him do it.

“Now this chapter of my life/book has come to an end and I won’t be talking about it anymore! To the ones who know me, I don’t need to say anything, and to the ones who don’t, I’m not trying to defend such ridiculous outlandish allegations.

Lastly, at that fight just as many others we had NO cutman because Deontay won’t need it. So I’m not a doctor but I know blood coming out of your ears and dazed eyes could be a brain issue. And power comes from your legs and his legs were gone! So I MADE A DECISION TO STOP THE FIGHT and I’d do it ALL AGAIN! I have a son Deontay’s age, I’m not looking to see him go out on his shield. I hope we all stay safe. There are so many bigger issues in the world!”

Cutting Corners

Boxing fans will want to know what Wilder has to say to the multiple claims made by Breland, suggesting the Alabama man was cutting corners in training, but  just happened to magically dispatch of his opponents. explosively.

Embodied in Breland’s revelations is that Wilder was beaten by Fury because he never trained seriously, as opposed to his claims of foul play.

Wilder will have to address Breland’s claim that he never took training seriously enough. It may explain why he may have fallen short against Fury, or it may just re-ignite his conviction that his water was spiked.

Issue

Wilder pursued a mediator to agree the way forward, and despite the terms of the contract stipulating a time frame for the rematch, most contracts are protected by the provision of the  ‘Force Majoeure; which takes into account extraneous factors that may interfere with the performance of a contract due to factors outside the control of the two parties.

There has been no official word how the mediation was revolved, though there have been whispers that a payout may have occurred.  The focus of the boxing world is now on the Fury and Joshua clash later this summer.

There have  been  interesting suggestions that Wilder himself may be looking forward to watching the Joshua Fury fight himself, giving him some respite from the pressures of preparing for another big title fight.

Amid all the psychological warfare going on in the background, Wilder may just be waiting for another chance at the winner.  In the mean time, there have been reports that he has his eyes on former IBF champion, Charles Martin for his next fight.
