Union Member Has Seen Covid Sick Pay Omission Evidence For Croydon Hospital Employees

By Gavin Mackintosh-

A union member has gone on record claiming that they have seen pay slips in which their members have not been paid sick pay when they were ill with Covid-19.

The claim is a bad look on Croydon hospital who insists it will pay all employees who are ill with Covid-19. Croydon hospital press office expressed surprise

Helen O’Connor, GMB Regional Organizer, told this publication:

“I have personally seen the payslips of our members that shows no sick pay during covid absence.

“When I have emailed management on the members’ behalf, the response I have received is underwhelming.

“I have email trails which prove that members have been at home, suffering from covid without a penny coming in.

“We are again calling on Croydon NHS Trust to intervene and ensure that their contractors are paying our members what they are owed.

GMB are staging a protest in front of Croydon hospital on Monday as a result of complaints of underpayment.

Croydon Council have said that none of their employee will loose pay, as a protest for Monday gets ready to go.

In a last ditch attempt to resolve the issue, the Council said that there will be no loss of pay due to time off caused by Covid-19, the hospital said they were looking to address the issues as soon as possible.

The workers are in dispute with their employers, outsourcing giant G4S, due to them being deprived of sick pay. Workers who have needed to self isolate after contracting Covid-19 claim to have been forced to work despite the health risk they pose to others, and simply cannot afford not to be paid.

Concerned workers have written to the chief executive of Croydon University Hospital to appeal for him to directly intervene, but no response have been forthcoming yet.

Many of the staff are said to be on very low wages and feel forced to come into the hospital when they have symptoms of the potentially deadly virus because they cannot afford to take time off to self-isolate.

The Eye Of Media.Com heard that bosses have been holding unto the new laws that have reduced the mandatory period for self isolation from 10 days to 5 days, and have been demanding workers to return to work after 5 days of self-isolation, and in some cases, denying them self isolation altogether, by refusing them seek pay.

A spokesperson for Croydon Health Services NHS Trust said:

“G4S, our contracted providers, have given us full assurance that no staff will lose pay if they are off sick with COVID-19. Our portering and domestic teams play a vital role in the care we provide for our patients and local community and their continued safety and wellbeing will always be our top priority.”
