Trump Impeachment From Office Being Explored By Opponents

US President Donald Trump’s opponents in the two houses of Congress have called for him to be removed or impeached from office after the violent scenes  that followed the insurrection at Capitol Hill by a mob of his supporters.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer(pictured) called for the immediate  removal of Trump, 17 days before his final day in office.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the president could be impeached. He said:

“This president should not hold office one day longer,” said Mr Schumer, who will lead the Democratic majority in the Senate when it begins its new session later this month.

He urged Mr Trump’s cabinet to remove him from office using the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, which allows the vice-president to step up if the president is unable to perform his duties owing to a mental or physical illness.

Republicans will have  to support the idea of impeachment, for it to happen, and not many have welcomed it yet. They will have a lot to chew on for days and nights now. News that four people died during the riot made it a bloody night in American history. 68 of them have now been arrested.

President-elect Joe Biden said: “Nobody could tell me that if it was a group of Black Lives Matter protesters yesterday they wouldn’t have been treated very differently than the thugs that stormed the Capitol.”

Mr Biden has refused to be drawn on the discussion of impeachment, saying he wants to concentrate on unifying the country.

Trump’s press spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said the president and his administration condemned the violence “in the strongest possible terms”..
